6-speed tranny problem??

I got a problem that i discovered last night...its kinda tough to describe but i'll give it a go... I have a 6-speed, and when i start in first, I get a bucking feeling like i'm not giving it enough gas. Or it also kinda feels like when you're peeling out. I also feel it when I'm in second and shifting to third, when i release the clutch, i get the same bucking kind of feel. It first started last night when I started my car, but it didn't go away once the car warmed up or anything. I know how to drive my car, so its not just me being a shitty driver... Any ideas?

I have 48,000 miles so i still have some warranty left. Another way to describe it would be if it were an automatic, i'd tell you my tranny was slipping badly and ready to go.

I don't think it's tranny related. I had that happen after I installed my headers recently. The ECU was having some problems with the air & gave a idle control failure code. A battery disconnect worked for me.

I would try that first.

MG2020, I have the EXACT same problem. my 03 cl-s has 42k on it. When the bucking starts, the further you depress the gas, the worse it gets. If you just slightly press and hold the gas, then ease your other foot off the clutch pedal, it doesn't buck. But if you're like me, you don't want to drive the car like Grandma Moses. Funny thing is it only happens when the outside temp is roughly 50 degrees or below. (I bought the car in September in VA, so the bucking never occured during test drives) I'm still under warranty, so I plan on scheduling an appointment this week.

Just got back from the dealer. After driving it, they say it is the clutch and pressure plate going out. I'm getting a second opinion, but they might be right.

Hopefully your pressure plate is OK... I ended up having to replace both. NOT cheap, and there is little in the way of options. Many on the board (with high HP) still maintain that the OEM clutch is the best. Good luck...

Both of these issues don't sound like a clutch problem.

Ok, I'm getting a different explanation each time I speak to an "expert". Yesterday, I went to a garage that specializes in hondas/acuras. Their response was "the clutch should be okay... but you might need to change your tranny fluid. Give us $50 to change the fluid and your problem might go away." I told them I'll give them a call if I decide to go with that option.
So today I stop by the Acura dealership and speak with a manager who was a former technician. After explaining the problem, and the proposed solution of a local garage, he says the culprit is the flywheel. According to this guy, if the flywheel is worn unevenly, it will cause a shudder/vibration whenever the clutch engages. He says this should not be confused with slippage. He then said that if I don't mind the shuddering, I can continue driving until the clutch wears out. Then, when I replace the clutch, I should resurface the flywheel.

What do you guys think? I'm not a mechanic. Do either explanations sound feasible?

The shuddering can be the flywheel surface but it cannot be resurfaced since it's a dual mass flywheel. If it's not slipping and you can tollerate the shuddering, he's probably right on driving it until you wear out the clutch.

If your service manager told you that you could resurface your flywheel you need to find a new dealership. I've been told from multiple sources that resurfacing a dual-mass design is not recommended.

Yep... when I had my clutch done the flywheel was toast as well, and Mr Steve is correct that you cannot re-surface a dual mass flywheel. Not a cheap thing to fix.

What I can't figure out is how your flywheel would be worn unevenly, if the clutch was still OK (not slipping).

The flywheel is feasible, but as said it would need some cause to make it that way.

You got it used? Anyway to find out the service records on it? Maybe it was a problem before & was fixed, or not fixed right?

You sure it's coming from the tranny? Not anything engine related, like plugs, dirt IAC, a misfire?

I always wanted an 03 type-s, so I purchased it with 42k miles on it about three months ago. It's a certified used car, and drove like it came right off the showroom floor, but there is no telling what happened during the first 42k miles. Fuzzy, I'll ask for a service record. Hopefully that will identify any past repairs that could be related to this problem.

The problem became noticable about a month ago. I don't think it's my driving style b/c I've been driving sticks since day 1.

Funny thing is, when the outside temperature is above 50ish, the problem goes away. This is truly the most elusive problem I've ever encountered with any of my cars.

Talked to my pops today about the problem. He was a drag strip racer back in the day(roadrunners, stangs, etc.). Anyway, he says it is indeed the flywheel and to just keep driving it and stop whining about it.
