5 Speed Maxima goes down.

I've been hearing all this talk about how the 5 speed Maxima is always faster, as well as the GS400. I've posted on the TLS forum of my hunting expiditions when ever such a claim is made.

Anyway, I've been hunting GS400 for over 2 weeks and have only found older people driving them just for status. Last weekend while out looking for a GS400 a moded IS300 and Maxima found me. After all was said and done only the guy in the Maxima had the balls to chat after the race.

The IS300 was fairly easy. I didn't have to work hard at all. Could have taken him easily just leaving it in D5.

However hearing that the 5 speed Maximas can take us if we aren't on top of our game I wasn't as cautious. The first run was very interesting. He came up fast and before I could downshift he was beside me running hard. I took it to 7000RPM in second and was slowly closing the gap. In 3rd I took it to 7000 again and was now past him and still pulling him at 110MPH.

WOW! I thought. These things are fast. So after we slow down he's just kind of looking at me, so I put my window and say nice run and fast car. He tells me he heard the TLS were fast, but never raced one. He asked if I would like to run him from a dead stop. I have to admit that I was a bit reluctant because of the 5 speed and tires he had. But what the hey, I got to lose some day. Besides to a vet or something like that.

We'll it's late and it's easy to catch a light to stage at. I turn VSA off and power brake to 2000. The light changes and the Maxima spins a little and off he goes. Better tires, I knew it. Anyway I spin a lttle more than he did, but quickly stop him from pulling me more than 1/2 a car length. By time I shift at 7000 out of 1st I am ever so slightly ahead, but pulling him. By the end of 2nd gear he's about 2 car lengths back and I let it go. He was a nice guy and I didn't want to rub it in.

So I slow down and tell him that he had me worried for a second. He said he thought he had me and was surprised that I pulled him once he jumped me. Asked me if it was stock and I said, "yep, except for the Mobil-1, I've not done a thing. He said stay cool and took off.

Now where is that GS400 hiding?

Good kill. If you're not careful, those 5sp Maximas are pretty fast. I used to have one. Which generation was it?

I know they are pretty fast. A good friend of mine has one, but it's an auto and all stock. Notice I also stated that in my initial reaction to his challenge I was a bit reluctant to run a 5 speed. In the end it was a good run, but not too hard.

Not real familar with their generations, but it was the one before the current model. I also don't think he had anything else except for wheels.

What you raced was a 4th Generation Maxima that covers 1995-1999.
