on 3rd set of front rotors at 21k miles!!

Yes, after only 21k miles I'll be taking my car in monday for it's 3rd set of front rotors. This is absolutely ridiculous. Also, it made me real upset when the service manager told me I should get aftermarket rotors. NO!! I should have quality rotors from Acura to begin with and if I later want to upgrade by my personal decision to aftermarket, then I will. He also said at around 36-42K miles, they will no longer replace the rotors, even though it's covered bumper to bumper for 50K miles!
Ok, I just got out of a problem like this with my Celica and I went to a lemon law lawyer and got all my payments refunded and the car bought back for what I owed on it. I'm nearly ready to do this again. Three times is the magic #. After this, it's pretty easy to get a replacement vehicle or payments refunded and the car bought back.
There were several other problems and current issues with the car as well, so if they persist, I may fight the dealer again and hopefully I'll win. Or, just get rid of it myself.

Guys, forgive my ignorance, but how do you know when your rotors need to be replaced? What are the symptoms?

Thanks!

Have you folks with warped rotors looked into the two major causes of the warpage? Improperly torqued lug nuts is a big one. Make sure you lugs are not fully tightened with an air tool. It should be finished by hand with a torque wrench to the proper setting.

The second cause, I was guilty of this, is hitting the hot rotors with water when you go to wash your car. We discovered this to be a big factor in the warping of the aftermarket Brembo cores on the Legend board. Our car is just as heavy and our breaks heat up fast. If you avoid these two things they should last a lot longer without warping. YMMV

These are really good points. I always try to clean my car when cool and avoid directly spraying the brakes with the hose, especially if I've driven the car in the last couple hours.

Especially for those of us with aftermarket wheels, a quality torque wrench (maybe $60-$80) is an absolute purchase for good car maintenance. 80 ft-lbs in a star pattern is my mantra .

well, whenever I take the car in for service, they torque the lug nuts properly and to the right specs. And I never wash the car after just driving it for a while. I'll probably go aftermarket soon--some Brembo cross-drilled.

Wayne: when you hit the brake, the brakes pulsate and the steering wheel shakes, doesn't stop as well either. It's VERY annoying. You'll definitely know what to look for when it happens to your car and i say WHEN because it's really not an IF with these cars!

Re: on 3rd set of front rotors at 21k miles!!

Funny, I had a 2001 CLS for almost 3 years and put 31k on it and never had a problem with the rotors.

I now have a 2003 CLS 6 speed.

Are you running with after market pads? Or maybe the excessive rotor wear you're experiencing has something to do with the way you're driving your car. If you're racing around all the time and hard on the brakes alot, I would expect that STOCK rotors would wear out quickly since they aren't designed to last under racing conditions.

Nope, I've had 8 cars, and the only one with continual rotor problems is my CL. The celica I owned had warped and rusted rotors and pads before I even drove it, so they were replaced.
I don't do much hard braking, actually about 0 and stock pads I'm using. I'm easy on the brakes and I dont drive like maniac. Went to the drag strip last year for the first time--no autocrossing. So I don't know what the problem is--anyway, there's a technical service bulletin about it, so it's affecting many people besides myself.

Been posted before ... But if you ever get new brakes make sure you've bedded them in properly! This is key to ensuring a long life with your rotors.

Mine are just starting to warp at 59k. I really wish i had the $$$ for a set of Brembros or Rotoras (although nobody has said that the rotoras fit with the stock rims, last i checked).

I just had mine done on Wednedsay, I was kind of surprized that they sprung for the pads since I had 39K miles on the car and well, I was the one who used them up, but there was no way I was paying for rotors and was prepared for a fight. The dealer couldn't have been nicer and took care of it all under warranty. I've never had a car that needed rotors before 140K. Once again, here's another pretty major issue fixed on my car and I am sure that I will never hear anything from Acura HQ, not even a questionnaire or anything. I've gotten questionnaires from every car manufacturer that I've ever bought a car from, I don't think Acura HQ really gives a $hit.
