330i step VS CL-Type S.

an interesting story from the www.bimmer.org

This is the story:

I have a 2001 BMW 330i with 18 in. MOMO SPORTS and 18 in. PIRELLI PZEROS. My engine is completely stock and I have STEPTRONIC TRANSMISSION. My friend has a 2001 ACURA CL TYPE S with COOL AIR INTAKE and 18 in. GIOVANNA CORSICAS with 18 in. TOYO TIRES. He has the SPORT SHIFT thing (which is like the same thing as the STEPTRONIC) We lined up and raced. My BMW would win everytime. We raced six times. I would get off the quicker because I don't skid out. My friend's ACURA skids out and I get ahead of him. The front of his car would be at my front tires, and then at about 45 MPH, I would pull away and he cant catch me. We even switched, I was in his ACURA and he was in my BIMMER. I turned on his traction control so it wouldnt skid out so badly. We both floored it, his acura didnt skid, and again he would be at my front tires, and about 40 - 45 MPH my BMW would take off. The BMW would beat the ACURA. Remember, my engine is stock, and his ACURA has COOL AIR INTAKE which gives him 10 more HP to the 260. Now he has 270 vs my 225. My BMW would just pull away. GOD DAMN, I LOVE MY BIMMER!!!

All I can say is come down to Houston and I'll race you. I'm really surprise it's the same results with traction control on. If you beat him without it on then you should be killing him with it on. Especially if you say that he was spinnig without it.

AT WORST this should be a very close race through the 1/4 mile. Maybe the CL-S's CAI was improperly installed or maybe there's a prob with his second stage. The results just don't sound right to me.

According to the numbers in Road and Track (which we all know to be quite slow for the CLS), this race shouldn't have turned out like this.

CLS: 0-60:6.7 1/4mile: 15.0@95.2
330 auto: 0-60:6.5 1/4mile: 15.0@94.0

But, the real kicker is looking at the trap speed and the time to 100mph:

CLS 0-100: 16.5
BMW 0-100: 17.8

That is a full 1.3 SECONDS slower to 100. Plus, our trap speed is higher meaning that at that speeed we are pulling away. And I'm sure we would pull up to the end of our third gear.

And once again, we all know that these numbers are way slow for the CLS.

Let's not forget that those numbers were derived from stock tires.

Of course if you just stomp on the pedal the CL is going to peel like crazy....what an idiot!!! Is he saying that his car is king if he beats a VIPER...who stomps on the throttle....peels for like a mile and the BMW edges him out.....

The story is partly believable, because The Cl-S had a wheel spin during launching. Both car have similar 0-60 times, and 1/4 miles times. Taking into account the Acura launched about 0.5 seconds later, the BMW surely would have won the race.

True...but he shouldn't have wheelspin at all..if he launched correctly..(sorry JD) but you have 18 with 225...this should be gropping the tarmac pretty damned good..maybe your friend is a better driver than you...and you aren't as good as you think...but that's not the point...he won...anyone can win a streetrace...

I can't believe this story is still going. The link given has been pulled (at least when I got there -- Amen).

1. The Bimmer is faster in every magazine test I've seen. The Auto is just about even with the CLS.

2. The air intake may give you about 5-8 HP.

3. You admitted that when you had the stock wheels, you were almost even with the 330 Automatic.

4. You admitted that the "very nice looking show wheels" probably weigh a ton.

Suggestion, if you want to race, without going nuts. Just put some sticky rubber on the stock 17" wheels (Toyo, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Michelin, Nitto, whatever).

It is silly to compare apples to oranges. You put lead weight wheels on and he obviously put on some very light 18" wheels.

The BMW being RWD, has the weight transfer working in its favor on fast acceleration (rear wheels get some extra weight on them to help traction). You're wheels are getting lifted off the ground, while his are getting planted!

So, put the stock rubber back on (as you said you have). Race him again, with the stock wheels and rubber, and see what happens.

Boy, do I have to get some Lead wheels to prove a point....

(just my opinions -- OK)

CL-Super,

Hey.. was your old 94 Legend Coupe any good?
How does it compare to your CL-S? Cause I believe that in 1994, it came with the type-II engine. 225 hp i think w/ a 6 spd?

Thanks

the type II engine made its debut in 93...as for the comparison, the Legend coupe would now be outdated but as for the quality...the type s does not compare to my legend coupe when it comes to luxury...performance on the coupe was extraordinary for a Luxury coupe built that solid...I believe my Type S could take my legend coupe but quality goes to the coupe...Then again the legend coupe was a 40K car about 8 years ago....

Is the legend RWD or FWD? I heard many "legendary" things about that coupe. What's the car 0-60? Is it DOHC VTEC?
