3.5L preliminary dyno curve -- not broken in

I hope this works -- I received an "anonymous" dyno of a 3.5Liter engine pull. The user wishes to remain anonymous, and I got a note that the engine WAS NOT broken in (had about 350 miles on it).

Once again, the area under the curve should be considered (in other words the broad curve of power being made).

So, here it is:

------------------
Silver 2001 CL-S with NAVI
  • Mud guards
  • Wheel locks
  • Toyo T1S 235/45ZR17-97W* Proxies on 17x8" SSR Competition wheels (48lbs less than stock)
  • Kevlar/SS Brake lines w/Brembos?
  • Comptech headers & sways
  • Silver AEM CAI
  • 9 coats of Zaino magic

That is only 8 HP more than Mike's and 10 lb.ft more than Mike's!!!

I am not sure if one can justify the additional $3,000 more for a marginal improvemet of just 10 HP at the wheels.

Overall that is 318 HP assuming stock is 200HP at the wheels.

------------------
Black, Ebony, 3.2 CL Type-S, NAV.
- 3M clear bra, by Stonguard (full front bumper, and side mirrors, and partial hood)
- Acura Spoiler, Moonroof visor
- Splash guards, Winter mats, Trunk liner
- Valentine V1 Radar Locator
- HELMS Service Manual
- PIAA 19169 road lamps
- 03/19/01: Injen Polished CAI
- 04/13/01: 235/40/18 NITTO 555 on 18x7.5, +45 offset, Koing Imagine in Silver with wheels locks

Not bad....not too good though for the price. Stroking the engine with MDX parts obviously isn't worth the money..IMO...13-20 more hp for what $5000...breaking in or not...it'll get only a few more horses..maybe you're better off getting headwork....or just spend your money on the SC when it comes out.

Do consider that the engine isn't broken in *and* I didn't do an overlay of the graphs.

So, its worth looking at...

BTW -- I got more speed pickup from my wheels than I did from the CAI and headers.

(and no I can't prove it...)

To prove it, easy... go to the track, mount stock tires, make 3 runs...

Now, mount you competetion rims woth Toyos, 3 runs and you have your proof

Can you explain why Mike got his "best" decrease in track time with the addition of the wheels and tires (we have the same ones)?

Also, compare the 2 graphs in a good image viewer, you will see that Mike is making about 180 HP at 5000 rpm and the 3.5L is making 200 HP at 5000 rpm.

I'm talking about area under the curve....

Eric,

You are the best Automotive engineer on the board. SO what shoud I say: Lighter rims....>>> easy to spin harder, UHP Summer tire... >>> more grip, overall less loss of traction... I noted before more HP no traction little or no improvement in ET.

Finally, I got asked if my puchase of the sways, headers, and CAI AEM was worth it and...

The price about $2000 with labor

Sitting on the butt of a WRX like glue -- Priceless!

So, I'm quite happy with the "package" of parts.

I thought every was interested in the "dyno" curve (although it is preliminary), but there is an idea that gets missed.

If you make power, across the whole power band, rather than just a 1000-2000 rpm, you are going to get better acceleration (unless you have a CVT).

Yes, the grip issue gets into this especially with our cars. You are right about this...

Eric we really appreciate the effort in having the scoop on the 3.5L Dyno.

Here is mike's Dyno, with his mod his making 195 lb.ft at 5000 rpm:

I said 180 HP @ 5000 RPM! not ft-lb (or lb-ft)... Compare the HP at 5000, and be carefull cause it is hard to see the red...

So, Mike seems to have one of the best (if not the best curve going)

BTW -- his curve was not done with the lightened wheels or tires (in case someone asks) *or* perhaps Mike will correct me...

So -- that's it. At some point, there will be some 1/4 miles times, etc. and everyone can make some decisions about what is worth what....

I didn't have the SSRs at the time.

I'll try and find the print out of the actual numbers and post them.

mike i need to scan the pics of my dyno. My HP curve is FLAT from where we started it at 4500RPM-on. It stays between 189-193 practically the whole way. It's quite impressive. I think thats why i would pull w/ you until the top of your power band.

also my torque band doesn't dip as early i believe. And my torque was at 194 lb ft
