3.5 convert Guru's, Chime in...

I have access to all the engine internals from a 2003 MDX.

From what I remember, the crank will work for a 3.5 conversion.

However, will the rods work for a 3.5 conversion?

I know that the pistons will not as the groves for the valves are too small.

Option 1
With '01-02 complete MDX block or '02-04 Odyssey complete block (crank/rods/pistons) it is required to purchase 2005 Acura RL pistons (new set $50 each) This is a best option still since these pistons have clearance for large 36mm J32A2 (intake) valves thus no modification needed. Despite the fact they have higher 11.0:1 CR still even supercharger can be used here with low boost up to 7psi intercooled (assuming safe AFR). In addition, if 11:1 CR is too high for you, you can use '03 CL-S pistons with 10.5:1 CR.

Option 2
'01-03 J32A2 block (CL-S)
Required to purchase the following:

-= hondaautomotiveparts.com =-
'02-'04 Odyssey (crankshaft)
Product No. 368270 or
Honda part #13310-PGK-A00

'02-'04 Odyssey (connecting rod)
Product No. 368269 or
Honda part #13210-PGK-A00

Main bearings + rod bearings

-= acuraautomotiveparts.org =-
'03 CL-S (pistons) - 10.5:1 CR or
'05 RL (pistons) - 11.0:1 CR

pistons rings (per chosen model)

The MDX rods will work.

what about the crank? will that fit or no?

In either case, I think I can use my CLS pistons and get away with it..

There's the other two threads in the 2nd Generation information thread too. (TypeR and CleanCL)

You can use CL-S pistons, but you'll get more power out of 05 RL pistons & rings.

This has not been proven, just for the record. Everyone has just been assuming that the 11.0 CR from RL pistons would equal more power when if you do the math you will see that CLS pistons with the MDX crank and rods will yield higher CR but more than likely too high for pump gas. Just wanted to put that out there.

you sure it's 02-04 MDX? i think it's 01-02 MDX only. i should know.

01-02 MDX
02-04 Odyssey

As for the discussion on compression ratios using RL pistons will obviously give you a 11.0:1 CR that does not need to take into account the longer stroke. As for the CLS pistons being reused, I am curious as to what the CR could be.
One would assume that it would naturally go up for the longer stroke bringing the piston face closer to the head decreasing the final volume and thus the displacement and uncompressed volume values are changed. If we had other measurements then we could actually calculate the final CR.

The difference in stroke between the 3.2 and 3.5 is 86mm vs 93mm so 7mm or 3.5mm each way. If everything else stays the same and the height of the piston from the middle of the wrist pin to the top doesn’t compensate for this difference of 3.5mm then the CR goes up, but then again you need to take into account piston volume (all the pockets domes and holes).

One could try using the 9.8CR pistons from the TL-P to get something over the 10.0, well im assuming it would go over 10.0 from the bump in displacement. Odyssey/MDX pistons provide for a 10.1 CR before adding additional clearance for the valves.

From the previous discussions, compression ratio was estimated to be 10.85 using CL-S pistons out of a J32A2.

So what would be the pros/cons to re-using the CL-S pistons? Does higher compression ratio = more power?

haha, we need answers! From what i understand, higher compression ratio allows the motor to extract more useful energry. But The CR with CL-S pistons is still fairly high.
When you increase the CR is it better to use higher octane gas to prevent knocking? I usually put in Sunoco 94.

hmm... Good point.. well looks like I'm using the CLS pistons and the MDX rods. Just need the crank.. Anyone?

Your best bet is to just buy the crankshaft brand new.

Otherwise, getting a hold of a used 02-04 oddy or 01-02 mdx block and swaping the internals would be a lot more economical.
