I was actually thinking about it as well. Are you going to swap out just the front two tires or all four?

Too bad, but the 245/40s would help with a bit of increased torque at the expense of a bit smaller front-to-rear patch. (And, yes I know that most of the drag radials [like the Nitto 555Rs are 245/45-17]..)
With the 235/45-17s just fitting on 17x8 +48s in the front with Comptech lowering springs, it might be a pretty close fit with the 245/45-17 (if any hard cornering was involved). For strip use, they would probably work fine...

From my experience. I put a set of Dunlop SP Sport 9000 tires in 245-45-17 on my previous car. It had 17X7 rims. I got nothing but shakes, vibration, & pulling. A set of stock tires/rims were put on, & it all went away. So it was the tires. However a few people I knew had put different brand tires on the same car, same size, & have no problems. It really depends on the tire. Some are more picky then others.

Just to be clear -- I hope that this is not considered an endorsement for the above-mentioned sizes (245/40-17 and 245/45-17) to be PUT on the 7" rims.
As mentioned in the previous post, a 50, 55, and/or 60 series tire with taller sidewalls; one could "get away" with tossing on a 245 on a 7" rim (no problemo).
See the following link with the specs for a Dunlop 9000. Check the listing for a 245/50-16 tire. It will happily fit on a 6.5- to 8.5-inch rim. And the "measuring" rim size is 7.5"
The same tire in a 245/45-17 wants an 8.0- to 9.5-inch rim. And the measuring rim size is 8.5"
JasonT: I have no doubts that you had some trouble putting the 245/45-17s on the stock 7" rims. Even the Dunlop 8000 in a 235/45-17s want to be put on a minimum rim width of 8-inches. (I believe that TireRack has one of the many boo-boos in its table for the SP-8000 – showing that the 245/45-17 can fit on a 7.5” rim. There are many of these errors that get loaded into these tables and they don’t seem to get corrected. If you care, check out the tables for the 9000 and then the 8000…) (Compare that to the Toyos and some other tires that only want a 7.5" minimum)...

As the profile goes down, the "restrictions" get more severe...
Finally, the exact make and brand of tire needs to be considered. For example, someone may say, "Hey, I've got a 245/45-17 xxx Firestone to work on the stock rims" and that should NOT be a "guarantee" that an S-03, Dunlop 8000/8000, or other tire would fit.
Some of the 235/45-17s out there very in section width by a fair amount...
