It's only 1/2", it'll be fine. You'll see a little more tire around the edges though, it'll still ride fine. I've seen some very weird and obscene tire applications. You're kosher. How much were the tires, and what brand did you go with? Lemme know how it rides once you get 'em on!

Don't know, but your starting to get a bit on the tight side. See if they will let you try. Depending on brand the min size for a 235/45-17 is 7.5". But I put them on the 7" stock weels first, then switch to the SSRs for lower unsprung weight and lower inertial mass. (BTW -- Max g-force doesn't seem to be that much better with the 8" vs the 7", but that is not why I went to 8".)
If the dealer will work with you, you can try it.
But, I just don't know

EricL: Why didn't you give the same response?

My Nitto 555 235/40/18 on 18x7.5 looks a bit deflated in the front. A bit Okay in the rear. But, I wished that my rims came in 18x8 and 3lb lighter!....
All what I did is I bought a cheap $10 digital tire gauge from wallmart and I check the tire presure regularly at night.

Won't work. 7" is the BARE MINIMUM and I don't even recommend 7". 8" is optimal. Check with the manufacturer of your particular tire, but I've never seen a 235 mounted on a 6.5" rim. The toyos I have work with 7, 7.5, and 8 (with 8 being the recommended size)

If someone wants to try something out-of-limits (like we did), then I say give it a try.
Technically, we went under the 7.5" minimum of the Toyo guide -- but, they worked well. I was so "paranoid" that I wouldn't do the upgrade until I could actually work with a dealer and "walk away" if it didn't work.
So, do I think a 235/45 on the 6.5" rim is a good idea -- NO!!!!
On the other hand, it is not like I have a lock on what people can or cannot do.
That is why I qualified my answer.
"If the dealer will work with you, you can try it.
But, I just don't know"
The emphasis on I don't know.
Your probably right, I should have just said, "I wouldn't do it."
BTW -- there are some 235s that actually do spec 7" as the minimum vs our 7.5" minimum. Since we "pushed" the limit, there is the possibility that he is talking about some other 235 that is constructed differently -- so, I just don't know. When I was looking through the 2" of tire specs, I noticed that 235/45s had different section widths.
