225's or 235's????

I need to order my summer tires for my stock 17's VERY SOON and can't decide between 225's and 235 Kumho Supra 712's. I have heard of some members having alignment problems after mounting 235/45/17's on their stock wheels. But I have also read about some who have absolutely no troubles with this width. I would love to put 235's on, but I don't want to have any problems.

I don't know if their are other factors in the cases where people have problems with 235's or not. My CL-S is 100% stock right now, but I plan on dropping it with Comptech springs and Tokico Blue's. I don't know if those mods will help or hurt the possibility of me having alignment issues if I go with 235/45/17 tires.

Should I just play it safe and go with 225/45/17's?
Is going up only one size from stock going to feel ANY different to me?...besides going from Michelin's to Kumhos, of course!!

I've got CT springs on my CLS 6sp and went with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 225/50ZR17s on stock rims. Haven't had any problems after 14k miles. Don't know about Kumho Supra, but I don't think you'll have a problem with the 225s. I was considering going to 235s later, but I think with a wider rim, I would probably have rubbing problems.

I am running the Michelin pilots in 222/50/17 on the TSX 17" 5-Star factory rim.

My car is lowered with CT springs and I also have CT sways as well.

I find that the sterring seems lighter at speed as opposed to a stock TL-S.,, but the car runs around curves very flat with no roll.

I have 235/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my CT drop and OEM rims, and they work well. I enjoy the tires alot.

You shouldn't have a problem with the 235/45/17-

Thanks for the link, greyjhu...Very helpful!

Should I consider 225/50/17's. They have a slightly LARGER diameter compared to stock 215/50/17? Would that be a better move than 225/45/17, because they have a slightly SMALLER diameter compared to stock. Any thoughts??

Thanks.

235's should put your rolling diameter very close to stock. 225/45's will rotate more per mile than stock so mileage will rack up a little quicker. Generally, the sidewall might also be a little stiffer so the ride might suffer a little but it should handle better. Of course, these variances also occur between different tires of the same size. All things to consider.

I thought the ride would be better w/ 235's cause u would have more meat on the sidewall than a 225??

You're talking about the 235's, right??

How possible is it that I will have rubbing problems since my Cl is otherwise stock? How about if/when I get Comptech springs and Tokico Blue's?

Does anyone here have or know someone with all of the above... the CT springs, Tokico Blue's, '03 stock wheels AND 235/45/15's???? I'd love to pick that person's brain.

go with the 235s you shouldn't have any problems with rubbing or too much ride degradation.

Sorry I can't help more I have 235/ 40s with the CT springs and sway bars but I'm roll'n on 18''s.

I will say this if your going to drop it, the car will look a lot better with 18''s. My stock '03 17'' factory wheels just didn't look right after I dropped it.

Thanks for the advice, jruss9819.

If I had the choice, I would probably go with 225/50/17's, but they don't make the Kumho Supra 712 in that size.

Oh, well; back to the drawing board, I guess. I'm pretty sure I will go with the 235/50/17, but who knows. I will probably change my mind twenty times before I pull the trigger at tirerack.com.

235/45/17 is the way to go. No more curbcheck.

Rolling stock???

215/50/17 is stock size.
I just wish Kumho made the Supra 712 in 225/50/17. But.......I won't complain about that anymore. I promise.

I wish I knew what to tell you, but I am struggling with the same issue. I have also heard that summer tires of the same size "can" (not always, but "can") be wider than all-season tires. So a 235 summer tire "can" actually be wider than a 235 allseason tire...almost as much as one size wider. Therefore, from what I have read from others on this site, a 235 summer, based on the tire make, can be nearly as wide as a 245 allseason tire from another maker.

Apparently the tolerance in terms of measuring width of some summer tires are larger than others. I don't want to order a 235 summer tire that actually measures almost the same width as a 245 allseason tire. That would be too wide for our stock wheels.

This is causing me to lean towards "chickening out" on ordering 235's, playing it safe, and ordering 225's. I might just do that. When I decide, I will post my final decision. Good luck.

I am having similiar issues in trying to decide the tire size to go with. I am upgrading to 18x7.5 wheels and trying to decide between 235s or 225s and between a 40 vs a 45 profile. Tire rack is recommending 225/45-18. For now I am thinking of going with the Yohohama AVS ES100 summer tires. Any tips from folks that have this setup ? The only reason I want to go with 45 profile is to avoid rim damage. Using the miata tool, 235/40-18 is most like the stock setup.

I am thinking about 235/40/18 but who knows. I may chicken out also and get 225/45/18s. I'll let you know. I get my wheels this weekend and then have about 1 week to think about what tires I want.

K I have decided on the 225/45 - 18 Yokohama AVS ES100's for the ASA AR1 rims. I checked out a handful of tires and they do not recommend the 235 width for a rim less than 8 inches. I know plenty of folks have done 235 on their stock wheels but I am gonna go with the tire company recommendations, I dont want my tire popping off in an emergency. As far as the profile i think 45 will be better for the rim considering I live in the nyc/LI area. The 225/45 - 18 setup increases the overall diameter by .5 inches so it should not be noticable.

Happy hunting and thanks for all the input guys
