2003 6-speed shift knob change

2003 6-speed owners -

I changed my shift knob last night to a ball style knob. I highly recommend it! Changing to a shorter ball style knob significantly reduces the throw distance. It's f'in great! Feels like the throw is an INCH!

I belive you are the first to do this. Please post a pic. This is a mod I want to do but I am not sure of how the shift boot fits with an aftermarket knob. Any info will be appreciated.

Ok, I'll write more on Monday. I've got to scoot though. The shift boot is pretty stiff so it stays up against the shift knob. Looks fine. Taking off the original was kind of a pain but not too bad.

Talk to you on Monday.

I was wondering about this (reduces shifter height and throw distance). Is the shift EFFORT increased significantly?

I did my shift knob with this round racing one from Momo with the grey performance boot. The round knob is awesome. The feel, and weight makes the shifting great. I also highly recommend changing out the shift knob to a Momo one.

WOW!!! The knob itself looks like it matches the Aegean Blue perfectly!!! The shift boot looks like Laguna Seca Blue from the BMW M3!!!!

I AGREE...THE MOMO COMBAT ONE LOOKS REAL GOOD WITH THAT SILVER TRIM ON THE INTERIOR..KEEPS IT LOOKING CLASSY AND SPORTY AT THE SAME TIME...

AS FOR THE BLUE ONE...... THAT LOOKS RICE TO ME...GOTTA GET SOME MORE BLUE INSIDE THAT CAR FOR THAT TO LOOK GOOD.

EITHER WAY...NICE...I WISH I WAS DRIVING THE 6-SPEED!

Hi guys, I am one of those who reads posts most of the time, but I have a question. How does one remove the shift knob ? I tried to turn it, but the entire shaft turns. How do I remove the knob from a 2003 6-speed ? Thanks

Thanks. Now all I need to add is the Momo shift boot to go along with it.

Can anyone recommend nice pedals?

I don't know guys. The blue knob would be a bit too much for me. My car is also Aegean Blue, but it has a black interior. The Blue Stick would be very much out of place.

Frankly I like the original leather wrapped stick, but I would agree that RegalBegal69's silver stick would go very well with the "brushed aluminum" trim in my car.

What I don't see in the pictures is the lower height of the stick that would presumably result in a shorter throw.

Shawn,

This is the best site for Momo stuff. It has all the shift knobs that Momo makes, even the newly released. Check it out...

Or maybe this one, but I’m not sure if I like that GRIP style over the BALL.

This is the one I have, but it is the one in Silver. The feel is great....you will love a round shift knob. It goes real low on the shifter, so it really feels like a short shifter.

You should also get the performance boot...it screws right on to the bottom of the shifter. The original boot has a funny top once you take the stock shift knob off. It doesn't look right with the new Momo.

I saw your photo and I like the shifter and the silver BOOT you put on there, but not the way it covers the entire trim plate with the “Type-S” logo and gate legend.

Did you try mounting it the way “6spdmanual” did with his BLUE one ?
It almost looks like there’s too much material there to do it that way.

As far as I know you just crank the sucker counterclockwise until it comes off.

I didn't try to do it the way 6spdmanual did, but I am sure it will work. I have the same amount of material on my boot that he does. They are both Momo boots, the only diffrence is my shift knob goes down farther then his. The shift boot looks way better in person, and I wanted to cover the whole trim. Didn't want anyone to know I had a Type-S!

I'm sure you can mount the boot anyway you like.

Yes Shawn. That is what I would assume as well.. However if you read the posts in this thread several have commented on difficulties in removing the knob. Just trying to understand the details.

You have to take the stock boot off the shifter knob first. It kind of clips in place. Just pull down around the chrome ring by the knob and the boot should pop away.

Remove the lower cover by just pulling the cover up from the side that has the type-S emblem. pull boot over the knob. twist boot and knob counter clockwise untill it is completely unthreaded. after removed, turn boot inside out and lightly squeeze the two clips together on the under side of the shift knob. large needle nose pliers should get it off without damaging anything. I got it off on the first try. this will separate the silver collar from the knob. the boot is attached to that collar with somekind of ziptie, just cut it incase you want to remove that too.

I just ordered a honda S2000 shift knob for my car, it looks like it will really match! 6SPEED

Fuck the S2000 knob!
I just installed the MOMO race air leather! it really matches the trim, hand brake and seats. I'll shoot some pics tomorrow, with the mugen pedals! I'm sooo happy!
BTW it really makes a big difference in shift throws, it is like the gears are right next to each other! It is really great! A must for 6 speeders!http://www.imageevent.com/bullaculla/knobandpedals
