Are we talking plain jane CRX Si with basic bolt-on(d16a6 engine)? Or swap rex with b series engine? This day rex are very tricky car, you don't know what's packin under the hood. good luck and race safe..

thats the think i barely even talk to him, he is a friend of a friend. he said he hasnt dont anything to the engine and i dont know too much about old hondas and their stock engines. lets just say he got it for 5500$ so i dont think he could of gotten it that cheap with an egine swap, just guessing here, dont know much about old hondas.

Most of the 89 Crx's that are still stock arent going for near $5500, i always see old crx's going for wayyy cheap (like $500-$900 cheap), it must have some mods done to it..

all the mods are just for looks, i normally dont like ricers but he has a nice car. has nice rims, fart-can, nice sounds system, racing seats, nice lights, a bit of a body kit for the front and a bran-new silver paint job that rivals my nice 2001 silver from acura. its a nice car, just nothin in the engine.

Get him to pop the hood before you race him. If you see two cams, don't race him. It is quiet popular for the CRX owners to swap in either the original ZC (DOHC, non VTEC), 1st Gen B16A (DOHC VTEC) or 1st Gen Integra GSR's B17A (DOHC VTEC) engines. Also look for signs of turbo, and / or nitrous.
If he has all of those mods on the outside of the car, I doubt the internals will be stock, of course unless if he is a true "rice boy" (the all show, no go type). My philosophy is if your car looks fast, it better go faster.

Keep in mind, even if he has mods or done a swap, it looks better for him to say "no mods" and then beat you than admit he has engine work and beat you. It makes you look slower and the kill that much more painful. If he has done an engine swap, it might be tough for you to tell if he has modded since personally I wouldn't be able to identify different engines by the way they look. I just never learned how.

In case if you have trouble identifing different engines, I have posted a couple of pics below.
CRX with ZC Motor (Notice the two "humps" on the valve cover, that is the sign of Duel Over Head Cams aka. DOHC)
B series motor (B16, 17, 18) (The valve cover could also be red, in most cases the valve cover will be black\greyish looking.)
Notice the DOHC VTEC sign, with any of these motors, the CRX will give you a run for your money.
CRX with Original engine (D15) Notice the size of the engine, it is slightly smaller then the above two engines, it typically has "16 valve Honda" etched on the engine, and it only has one hump for single over head cam (SOHC)
I hope this will help.
