2001 5AT vs 2003 6 Spd

So it has come down to the CL-S to replace my 93 legend 6Spd.

I am deciding whether it is worth it to spend the extra $8-9k on a manual CL-S.

This is my dilemma:

Even if the 01 auto has extended warranty until 160kms, what happens to the resale value of the car just before/after this?

After this, what are the chances of the tranny going kapput?

03:

Spending an extra 8-9k on a car with a tranny that has no known problems?

BUT! I have read a few of the posts here about people grinding gears.....what is with that? Warranty work?

Will the resale still exist even though the car was only made for one year?

Any other comments would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Resale is in the toilet regardless of drivetrain.

Auto > M/T

You think the auto will have a greater resale than the MT? How come?

No no, it’s just my preference that i prefer auto cars over those with manual transmissions. My bad I should have made it clearer. :o

So why is the resale value of these cars so brutal then?

It's a discontinued model. It's a coupe. And since the 2001-2003 are only a few years old, they have already had their biggest years of depreciation.

I'd suspect that the depreciation of the 2001's should start to level off now. I can't see the CLS going for less then 12-15K until they are older then 5-6 years old.

Also, the manual version of our car will probably have a lower resale value because most people who look to buy are cars are looking for luxury, not sporty which is why you have a manual.

Perhaps the fact that there were only about 2700 6mt's built might help resale in the long run. But also you should know the clutch pedal on the 6mt is quite tricky. After a month I'm still having trouble getting used to the pedal. I had an Integra GS-R and it didn't take any time to get used to that clutch but this one is a whole bunch different.

The Manuals are harder to sell. The local acura dealer here has 2 manuals left over and no automatics.

I will probably keep this car for over 160 000km so I am not worried about immediate resale. I am also a pretty good manual driver with my 6 speed so I am not really worried about that either.....my concern is that if I buy an auto, it will die on me after 160k or I will have trouble selling it.

Thanks for all of the input!

Dude, the clutch takes a no time to get used to. I had a 95 civic for 100K miles before the CL and I was driving smoothly within a week.

According to the books the manual is worth LESS right now, but I feel this will be overcome in the next few years if you’re dealing with a private buyer.
The manual will demand MORE money if/when you find the right buyer.
Especially since there were so few made.

Sure, if you just show up at a dealership for a trade, sure you’re gonna get hosed.
I was offered 7,800 for my 91 5-Speed Legend Coupe at the dealer in trade for a 2001 CL-S when it was new.
I got 11,500 from a private buyer after only a week or two of advertising.
It was someone who was SPECIFICALLY looking for a Legend Coupe w/stick.

Fast-Forward four or five years and I bet a 2003 Auto will be selling for 10-12K while a 6-Speed will go for 1-2K MORE if you kept it in good shape and find the right buyer.

Only time will tell if I’m right or not.
If I’m NOT, my car will not be sold when I buy something new. It will become my “beater”.

The CL has crap resale value no matter what trim. So if your worried about resale, don't get a CL. I disagree that the 6 speed will be worth more. Both drivtrains will be worth the same. However you might be able to get a few hundred $$ more from a private buyer who knows about the CL & how limited the 6 speed is. Given the amount of bad press the CL/TL has gotten because of bad trannys, I don't think there will be a market for the car 5 years from now. IMHO

Just talk down a dealer and get the 6-speed. You can probably find on for 27k (US). or find one here slightly used in the black market section.

I am looking in the US actually and if a local 6 speed does not work out, I may get serious about buying the car from the US.

My max is $23k US tops.

Once I get this into Canada, by the time exchange, and shipping and everything is done, it will be about $32k CDN.

I am not really too worried about mileage....up to about 25k miles is fine with me.

I will be able to save about $3k if I go into the US.

I can get a local silver car with 27k miles for $33500 CDN including all taxes and everything.....but I am trying to stay under $32k CDN.

If you guys know of any 6 speeds for sale around this price, I just ay be interested.

Thanks.

THey got one. Their asking 24k but I'm sure you could get it for under 23K. Its slightly far away, but they're pretty cool. I bought my car from them and they were nice. Call 973-239-3700 and ask for Max. Tell him Brett sent you.

I would rather buy from an Acura dealership for sure.....I am trying to stay away from going into the US, with all the hassle of importing etc, but to save the cash, it just may be worth it.

Thanks!
