1st Videos

I finally got around to testing the new video camera in the car. These are very boring and basic but served the test purposes. The real video will come the next time I head to the mountains.

No comments on the quality, format or size. This was the first time I captured video to my Laptop.

The first three are the only of real interest, I had to run to the store when I took this and ended up driving a little bit.

Whoah!!! What did you use to capture the video?
Hardware and software.
That looks like the inside of a CL-S.

That's some...erm... interesting music.

Cool vids though. I don't feel so bad about how much I push my car anymore though. You are definitely harder on yours. You banged the rev limiter in that first vid I think. And it sounds like you use SS.

The camera is a Sharp MiniDV Camcorder VLNZ8U and I used my laptop to do the capture. The laptop is a Gateway Solo 9300 with an intergral ATI WDM 829 Capture card. I have WinXP loaded so Windows Movie Maker comes installed which is what I used. But later on I'll probably just use Adobe Premier.

I was very pleased with the look and was extremely pleased with the sound. It did truly capture the sound of a CL-S. Now I am really looking forward to a mountain drive.

heheh, Tool - Aenema off of Aenima

Yea, I pretty much use SS all of the time. Very rarely is it in full automatic mode. I don't hit the limiter too often but it is something that will occur sometimes when pushing it. But I guess that is what it is there for.

You have no CAI, I guess, or am I wrong?

Go get the Injen CAI,...you will like it.

Since August of 2000. I was the first one on that forum to do this, well before AEM made one specifically for the CL-S. I had taken a TL intake and moddified it to fit.

Now I don't remember the exact top speeds in each gear, but we know you hit the rev limiter in 2nd gear (as I doubt you were doing 115mph)... Anyway, what I was thinking was that we know you were going pretty good, and the image and camera quality was excellent, but how do you get a better sensation of speed?

So I was thinking, I don't know how you setup the camera, but could you move it forward towards the glass, or zoom in just a tad, this will get less of the interior, and maybe more of the pavement. Of course, if you zoom in you loose more of the side image and with the trees that does help the speed sensation?

What about a wide angle lense attachement?

And, this may be crazy, but what about attaching it out of your sun roof, then pointing the camera down to get the hood just a bit. Then you will get the pavement right in front of your car some and then it will look like you are moving faster....

Anyway, great job... Really impressive. I think you should send the ones from the mountains to Acura....
Maybe even get one of use to go driving with you and have some passing and following in the mountains.....

Later,
Derek

After veiwing it I have been going over the same aspects. I'll probably try a few different configuration in hopes of finding one that does give a better impression of speed. I found the 'thrill' of the video to be a little lacking due to the lack of feel for the speed...

How exactly did you mount your camera in the car?

If you could take pics I would be most appreciative!

Whenever I try mounting my camera with a tripod, the tripod falls over on the first turn.

I basically compression mounted in in the opening in the passenger head rest. I raised the head rest, sat the camera in place, and closed the head rest on top of it. I did tie down the hand strap just in case it got loose, but it stayed in place very well and somewhat cushioned.

Here is the camera:

Mount..

Scalbert,
Ditto please tell us how you mounted the camera, from what I see it looks like it was possibly wedged under the head rest on the passenger side?? The picture was very stable, so I doubt a tripod was being used (or a regular camera tripod anyways). I would assume that the camera has an anti-jitter feature??

This set up would look great for any auto-x'ers out there (if you could get the camera to stay still enough).

Superb job on the captures Scalbert

Yes, it does have image stabilization and the autocross issue (along with the mountain driving) is why i did this test.

Oops I forgot

Many Auto-X events won't let you use the camera unless the camera is significantly 'secured' in place. So on second thought, unless this could be secured significantly, it may not fly for Auto-X

Looks like a gooc comcept, but out seat is not straight at the top, right below the headrest. WOuld we be able to put out head rests up far enough for it to rest on the two 'peaks' for lack of a better word?

Well welcome to the board. There are a few in the ATL area. Although I am in the opposite corner of the metro area, people are still scattered about.

There are people from the south side near Forest Park and then heading east around your area and then up to Tucker (so up a bit futher). Then there are some on the downtown area also. But I seem to be isolated in the northwest area, up I75 (until you hit the Dalton/Chatanooga where Caddy roams).

We'll try and get an ATL meet together soon...
