18" rims blow! Somebody please sympathize and Advise

Well,
I am god awefully pissed and I want to take out my gun and shoot someone!

I think Im blaming Mattg for this....It all starts with him and how I admired his wheels :P
Last June I go and buy a set of 18" Centerline RPMs....5 months later I crack two rims (which are STILL being fixed by Centerline, ...saving grace)

So...I say F*ck it and but a set of Racing Hart C4's ...2 months later and because os a ginormous pothole, I have 2 bent rims and 1 flat tire and I sent the wheel off for repair but it can't be fixed!

Currently I am driving around on a spare and I have a bent rim on the same side...

Since Centerline is in no hurry to get my rims back to men (since they are kind enough to fix them for free)...I need new rims..FOR THE 3RD F*CKING TIME

I NEED ADVICE

The roads in Philly suck worse then the Eagles when playing Carolina

Should I buy a new RH C4 ($220) + a new tire $113 and risk bending again (not to mention this will still leave me with 1 bent rim)...

Or should I but a set of 17's w/ tires for < $800 and sell the Centerlines and the remaining good wheels when they come in from Centerline?

Anyone else who drives shitty roads with me in the fact that bigger rims blow on the shitty roads? I started looking today at cars w/ 17s and cars w/ 18's...The difference is so slight...

I think Im gonna convert back to 17s

Fuck it ...Im not happy....Im gonna be stuck in this shitty basement with my parents forever....Just when I get in stride and start saving...Some shit like this comes along......PISSED!

235/40/18s will give you a bit more meat to protect your rims. How much air do you run in your tires?

Not to sound like an ass but you've got to be more conscious of the road conditions while you drive. Frisco has potholes as with many other cities round the country.
Its not that bigger rims blow but the fact that low progile tires don't absorb as much impact. Try going with 45 tires instead of 35 or 40. It might help a little.
Sorry to hear about your problems

Tire pressure is around 37 psi...as recommended by Toyo...

And yes, I know I need to be careful..But I actually did all of this in the Acura dealer lot late at night

Man that sucks. 37psi should be plenty. I run 17s with 235/45s though. The roads here suck too. I've bent rims on 2 other cars.

1. Watch your tire pressures. Keep 'em on the high side (without going overboard). Once the sidewall is completely compressed, you're in trouble.

2. As mentioned previously, watch for hazards. Even a 17" wheel/tire will eat shit if the pothole is nasty enough and you really moving...

You bent rims in a lot? How fast were you going??

I've never been to Philadelphia, but I've heard the roads there suck. You should just get some 17"s and be happy with it. Less chance of messing them up.

Yeah man here in NY roads are shitty also. I've been thru 2 sets of 18's and both times in less than a month something fucked one of them or my tires...I'm just fed up w/ it. I'm gonna get some 17's w/ 225/45 tires which have a slight lower profile than OEM tires...and then I'm gonna slam it w/ a set of Teins. That way my ride quality will be adjustable and so will the height plus when a car is slammed the smaller size rims don't look that bad anymore

Wow, you must have some pretty jacked up roads there in Philly. I have Alessio 18's with 235/40's, and I've driven up a good 4" vertical step in the road at 40-45 mph or so (in addition to various potholes over a few years), and still no bent rims.

I don't know what size tire you have, but for 18's, a 245/40 would be the ideal size for the CL. I wouldn't go anything less than that if you have crappy streets. That would give you a decent amount of cushion for those potholes.

And as far as your financial situation, you can just buy two replacement Racing Harts, and then sell your Centerlines. That should put you at about even, or even ahead in the long run. Good luck!

Btw, the stock tire size for the 2001 CL is 215/50R17. You can check out Tire Calculator to see what rim and tire combo matches best.

Roads are a little different where they get dug up with snow plows every year. Sometimes there will be a 2 foot jagged edged hole right in the middle of the road that wasn't there the day before.

Problem w/ the Centerlines is they are 18x7"... so 235 is even pushing it... nevermind 240 or 245. I still want to take my chances here in Baltimore w/ those rims though... love 'em

I've had 19"s for 2 years....no problems....well....a flat tire, but it had nothing to do with the wheels. I just scan the roads like a hawk when i'm driving!

Better make sure the fall is short -- a friend bent a 17x7.5. HRE that took a while to make, while to fix, and then: $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and $$$$$$$$

shit i live near you and my 19"s are coming soon. might wait until the winter potholes get filled in before i start driving the z again. there's some car swallowers out there. wonder why stock rims don't usually get bent...i've hit several potholes with my z on the 18's and no problem whatsoever...pretty certain they arent forged either.

Where is your stockers?

I run on 19's with 35 series tires.. I'm very carefull on where I go, and decide the route ahead of time.. I know it's a pain.. but thats the price you have to pay. :o

Now, if only they can integrate pothole locations into the Nav, I would buy that in a heart beat.

Im overseas now. However, when I'm home in Chicago I put stock rims/tires in late November and put the light forged rims back on first week in May. The potholes are mess in Chicago as well. This way I keep them in shape and usually drive the route I know of skipping potholes.

I had two sets of 18" Vault wheels that were really light. I bent 6 out of 8 of them here in Florida on crummy roads.

I think it has more to do with the lighter style and design than anything. I'm sacrificing a few pounds, but got some ICW 786h wheels (still 18") and Nitto 555r 225/40/18for $1,100 new...I've had them on the car for almost 10 months and hit some bad holes, but none have bent at all...

I'm not saying go out and get big 'ol chrome nasties, just maybe a sturdier wheel...
