158,000K and Tranny showing signs of death
Well, it's been 10 yrs and 158,000 miles since I bought my 3.2 CL and it seems the 2nd tranny is about to bite the bullet. The 1st tranny was actually replaced when I had 20K miles. So technically, 138,000 on this one. Slipping between 2nd & 3rd gear shifts have been happening for about 2 months now. Any chance it could be anything else besides complete failure. Has anyone taken their CL to anyplace other than the dealership to have the tranny replaced?

My second one lasted 132K so you are pretty much on the money. You could do a complete 3 x 3 drain and refill to see if that helps. I am surprised it has been happening for 2 months though. Mine came out of nowhere and failed within minutes so maybe you just have a solenoid issue or something. Don't bother with the dealer, they won't diagnose and will only do a full replacement. Find a local shop that specialzes in Honda and Acura like I did. Good luck!

Do the 3x tranny change
This happenned to my cls transmission last month start slipping especially on the incline driving roads. What you need to do is to drop your transmission fluid three time in different intervals. First off buy an Acura or Honda transmission fluid at the dealer " Do not buy any aftermaket fluid which will only do harm on your tranny. it's about $10 a quart and you gonna need 3 quarts. These are the following procedure i've done:
1. Jack the car and put the stand on both sides. Safety first
2. Drain the tranny by using 3/8 Rachet loosen the transmission drain plug.
Note: You will notice the old fluid is so dark and the drain plug end with magnet had a lot of metal debris. You be surprised.
3. After draining the old fluid clean the drain plug magnetic end and put the drain plug bolt back and tightened.
5. Unjack the car.
4. Loosen the ATF bolt "labeled ATF" located behind the transmission Dipstick about 6" northeast. You will need a 17mm 1/2 drive Rachet with or without 1/2 extension.
Note:this is where you gonna put the tranny fluid start with 2 1/2 quarts.
5. After filling 2 1/2 quarts. Tightened the ATF bolt.
6. Start the car and run the gears. Step on the brake at all time put the transmission gears on P, R, N, D5, D4, D3, 2, & 1 with 10 sec intervals on each gears.
7. Check transmission fluid level add fluid if necessary.
Do this procedure again 2 more times maybe after driving the car for like a week. Have the new transmission fluid wash all the remaining debris then change the tranny fluid again two times.
Total cost will be around: $90
After doing this I notice the difference. The transmission don't slip anymore and became more responsive. This might be the cheapest fix instead of having a transmission failure again and again.
The acura mechanic told me that our car needs transmission Fluid change must be done every oil change or every other oil change. That's the secret of it. It works for me.
Im an aircraft mechanic and I think the design of our transmission is not good plus our tranny did not have a way to cool the fluid thru radiator like most car.
I installed transmission cooler 15,000 btu. This will helps your transmission cools and prevent gunks or burnt fluid which leads to failure.
Hope this helps. Acura cls is truly a powerful car and just love driving it.
