03 SMR CL-S at the Infiniti of Norwood dealership in MA...

So, just like the title says, I found an SMR 03 CL-S (auto) at the Infiniti of Norwood dealership in MA. It's got 40K miles and is advertised at $18,995...

Now, I wasn't planning on trading up my 2001 NBP CL-S any time soon, but i sorta got a thing for SMR CL's...

Now, what are your opinions considering the following facts:

MY CAR
01 NBP CL-S with 107K miles in excellent condition
(all major service has already been done...timing belt, new tires, new brakes, new rotors, plus much more)

THE CAR AT THE DEALERSHIP

Ideally, I would want to pay a difference of about $5000 (that's price of the new car minus trade-in value of my car)... what do you think? Is it feasible? Would it be a good decision?

haha, yea... it had 99K when I bought it a year ago. I knew the risks I was getting in to, but the tranny shifts flawlessly and the price was great...

Anyways, how much do you think I can get for it if I trade it in? Better yet, how much do you think I can bargain down the SMR one for?

On a side note, would anyone be kind enough to run a CarFax on it?

That CL-s is nice. It all comes down to if you want the car or not. The only thing I see you having a problem with is the amount you get for your trade. I looked it up and its anywhere from 7,800$-10,100$ for it. I really only see the dealer doing something around 8,000$ tops. With them kind of miles its gonna be a hard sell to do any better than that no matter what the car runs or drives like. So if you have enough equity in your ride or you own it outright it might be worth it. A lil tip though is when the dealer puts a price on the internet that is usually the absoloute bottom line price for them.Goodluck if you decide to biteand let us know how it goes.

Are you looking specifically for a SMR auto ?? I'd hold out for a 6spd, but that's just me...

If you set the "out of pocket" price you're willing to pay at $5000, it might be tough to get them to go for that, as 100K plus 01's aren't fetching that much resale wise...

We had a RI member buy a 03 6spd w/ 92K miles for 13.5K (retail price from a dealer)... so it's going to be tough to get that for a car that's 2 years older...

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...t=high+mileage

Set the price difference you're willing to pay and ask the dealer if they are willing to do the deal. If they are, then fine, you'll have a car w/ the tranny covered for another 60K miles, and if not, you can keep looking...

If you can wait a couple of years, I'll sell you my SMR 6spd

If you're gonna buy an 03, you might as well buy the right kind!

Get a manual one! Better yet, get mine. It only has 30K miles!!!

So, I made an appt. with the salesperson to see the car, and he was faxing me the carfax and other info... then, 10 minutes later, he calls me and tells me the car is sold!

Of course, I'm dissappointed, but I guess it's for the best... maybe you guys are right and I SHOULD wait for anther one (maybe a 6spd)...

BTW, I thought only certain 03 auto's have a tranny problem (up to a certain VIN#)... is that true? I say this because I only drive in the city, and a manual might get on my nerves... please don't flame me for saying that tho!

All A/T CLs are unfortunately prone to this problem.

From EricL's post here, I got the following quote:
BACKGROUND

In certain vehicles, a higher than normal number of automatic transmission may have defects in material or workmanship that could cause premature wear or failure. To insure that customers have adequate warranty coverage, American Honda is increasing the warranty on the transmission (including solenoids) and the torque converter to 7 years or 100,000 miles whichever occurs first.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

2000-02 3.2TL: All

2003 3.2TL (except Type S):
From VIN 19UUA5…3A000001 thru 19UUA5…3A019556

2003 3.2TL Type S:
From VIN 19UUA5…3A000001 thru 19UUA5…3A019061

2001-02 3.2CL: All

2003 3.2CL (all models):
From VIN 19UYA42…3A000001 thru 19UYA42…3A005203
The CL at the dealership was not within the affected range of VIN#'s...does that mean it did not have the faulty tranny?

The 3rd gear clutchpacks cause most of the transmission problems, and that was not corrected. The only difference in the later model 03s was that the oil jet kit was incorporated rather than an add on.

What it means is that it isn't covered under the 7year/100K warranty.... Will it have problems, who knows... But some of the 03's aren't covered under the "tranny" warranty like the 01's and 02's...

I've already sold a Canadian-plated car to a US citizen, who flew up here, bought the car off me, then drove it down. He said custom's wasn't a bitch!

I'll send you a PM!
