03 is good for the auto transmission.

It's the 01-02 auto that are notorious.

It's hit or miss...no formula.

Just get the 6 speed transmission and you'll be all good.

If it's in a price range you can afford & isn't abused with high miles....sure

The trans problems are of a concern. Even 03's had problems, & some aren't covered by the trans warranty.
Every other aspect of the car is great however.

Personally I would not buy an auto trans CL.

Don't listen to this idiot. The CL is a great manufactured car and like the other said its hit or miss 50/50.

Ill give u my personal experience when i bought my 01 cl-s after about 5k miles my tranny started buckling and ded BUT i researched beforehand with the local MAJOR dealership (Rally-E of Great Neck, NY) and my trans. was still under warranty, so they replaced it for me for free completely with a factory crate new trans (not remanufactured or rebuilt) cost them $9k in fees, cost me nothing! my tranny has worked perfectly ever since and im at 101k miles now.

my advice: find out the VIN of the cls u wanna purchase call up your local MAJOR dealership and find out if the trans is still under recall warranty and they can replace for free!

If the tranny is still under warrenty buy it do a few nutral drops to kill it and then do what thamind said.. I purposly killed my tranny at 99K miles to get a new one b4 my warrenty expired and now it has been trouble free ever since. If u keep on top of the tranny fluid and dont use the ss and abuse the tranny u will be fine.

Is there really a link between using SS and the tranny problem? I use SS all the time and am wondering if that could potentially increase tranny failure. Normally I use it in traffic between 1st and 3rd gear.

@When i first got my car I used SS all the time and my tranny went at 30k miles..2nd tranny i used ss alot less but still used it once in awile and my tranny went at 99k (69k on the 2nd tranny) 3rd tranny which is the one I have now is the one they supposedly fixed the problem has 65k miles and running strong never use ss anymore. SO i would say ss puts more stress on the tranny and it lasted double as long when I used it alot less!

K think about it logically.. SS only allows the driver to choose the RPMS.. so SS means YOU are now the trans RPMS.. and it's a given that if you're in SS mode you'll be WAY more likely to not upshift, and RIP it... it's 2fold.

SS is nothing more than overriding the normal trans's mind. So it's not like SS = tranny death... SS allows your driving habits to kill our trans. YES it should b able to take w/e beating I AGREE.. but SS is for when you wanna do something stupid.. not for daily driving.

Besides if you like shifting so much get a MANUAL?? it's got an extra gear for u to play with too lol.

I got auto because I've had it with stick for now... I like the leisure driving, you know... having a bite to eat while driving, or traffic jams (i hate the clutch then!).. and this car is leisure, definately not a race car. So the way I see it why would you be in SS all the time? It's an oxymoron, if you like shifting then shift for real. SS is to imitate the real thing, the tranny prolly dies cause it wish it were stick..

Just get an 03 6spd, and avoid all the auto tranny issue all together... That's what I did...

When I joined the forum back in 2002, there was already a subforum dedicated to tranny issues... Not a good sign.

The 03's have just as much trouble with the auto transmission as the 01's and 02's... Acura thought they "fixed" the issue in the middle of the 03 model year, but the later 03's still had problems. What makes it worst, is that the later 03's aren't covered under the 100K/7yr warranty, so if the auto tranny goes on a late 03, you own it...

I'm so glad I've got a 6spd.
