01CLS vs. M3 part 2

*performed by professionals on closed course*

01 cls - full tank of gas, VSA off

M3 - new style & hard top, bone stock engine, suspension, brakes, and a male passenger

0-110

i get off the line with a little spin, i hear a little tire spin from both cars, i actually jump about half a car from 0-40, at shift for 2nd i spin tires and i hear m3 spin a little too. at 60 mph i see him creep up about half a car but i guess he shifted bc at 3rd gear / 70 i was maintaining my position. we run basically side by side, m3 never passes me. i shift to 4th and im pulling to 120+, but i feel the m3 shut down at about 110-115.

gracious driver. asked me if i had a supercharger. i said no, all motor. big suprise on his face. explained to him that it was just stroked w/ crank/rods. exact words "that thing grips" "thats fast". said his car was bone stock except for suspension and brakes. nice guy. fun race. also asked if it was manual and was shocked when i said auto. whoever said the CL-S is slow?

and i'm not done modding...

yup, i'm auto.

i wouldnt say i killed an m3. if he didnt have a passenger i'm sure he would have had me by about a car. if you got the right tires and know how to launch the cl-s, you can suprise people off the line. for fwd it can tug in 1st.

i still don't have a dyno, but to keep up with m3 i'm guessing im knocking on the door of around 270whp and 250 tq, my goal for this car is 300 whp n/a, which i think is totally possible. i think i can take a blown cl-s auto w/ reg pulley and normal bolt-ons. i'm not sure about one w/ high boost pulley. if they are making less than 300 whp, i think i have a chance bc my torque curve is far greater.

wow, nice work. I bet that LSD in dr evil trans is really helping your traction, not to mention all your motor mounts with poly, and the engine damper. I'd love to see some track times after youg et it tuned.

yea, too be honest i didn't notice much in terms of transmission performance... but that's probably just it. it's performing ideal under all conditions. it's doing it's job.

the rotora BBK is excellent, the rear now isn't nearly as stable, the front has so much braking force at high speeds since we're so nose heavy. so i'm upgrading the rears to the 2 piece BBK soon and that should even things out.

eventually i'll go with the 2 piece front BBK for the weight savings.

cf hood/trunk come in these week, i'm expecting about 50lbs of weight off the car. possibly more, i heard the hood shaves 30-40, but the trunk feels extremely heavy.

thanks, the car is so fun to drive now, i'm hoping others will see that too. and like someone else mentioned, it remains dignified from the inside and out. it's not outlandish, it looks nice, its comfortable, and it's unique. the only other major motor work i may go into is the 6spd swap, but that won't be for a very long time. i need to focus on finishing my setup.

Posts like this make me miss my ol' S/C'd CLS. That thing surprised the hell out of everyone.

BTW, mine put down 283whp/242wtq with the high boost pulley. Torque is pretty much a straight line right across. She pulled well in all gears!

Sorry for the dunb question... what is "stroked w/ crank/rods"? It must add a lot cause I used to have an 01 CLS with I/H/E/Pulleys and got killed by an M3 that just walked away from me... on two seperate runs. It was a cute blonde driving too .

seattle - yes, you had a quick one, but now you have something much faster. btw i feel i'm very close to 275whp / 240-250tq n/a.

goredcar - your 01 cls had 3.2L, mine has 3.5L

My new car is faster, but not by a whole lot in a 1/4 mile from a stop. My best in the CL was 13.4@105 and in the CTSV is 12.8@116. Obviously, from a roll it wouldn't be close but the CL could easily hang from about 0-70mph. After that, the torque of the V and the better gearing (3.73) would let it start to really pull away. Alot of people complain about the FWD configuration of the CL being a severe handicap but you should try to launch this V from a standstill. Hoppity-hoppity-hop like crazy. My run above was with a 2.1 or 2.2 (can't remember) 60' which is not that good in a RWD car.

i'm planning to peak all motor on this car and that's it bc of the FWD, next up will be awd or rwd. that being said, this car actually puts the power down fairly well. and with some custom suspension work launching this CL isn't bad, and on the highway it will just like any other car. i just feel like if i go FI on the 3.5, i'll start to have power that i can't use. but i still have some more mods up my sleeve, my goes is 300whp all motor, which i think is perfectly capable of and if ran correctly shoudl pull into 12s.

good luck with the V, i've had my eye on the XLR-V for a very long time, but i just can't justify the price, i'd rather get into a jag XK-R for that money.
