01 CLS Vs. GTI
On my way to work, once I get off the freeway, I fly down the road I work on. It is 45 MPH but never any cops and no traffic at 11:30 AM. So I'm doing my usual 80 MPH and fly by this guy in a blk GTI. He comes into my lane and is flashing me, I am 30 ft from work and already running late, so I couldnt run him. Mabe we will meet again! So I come into work and my buddy is a huge import racer/fan, I was telling him about the GTI and he was like ooooooooo he might have got you man. ARE YOU SERRIOUS, is that thing really fast? I admit I am a relative noob to the import scene but common a freaking VW????

Hell no. There is no way a factory GTI is going to take a CL S. Here's why:
2001 CL S v.s. 2001 Volkswagen GTI turbo.
6 cylinders standard, versus 4 cylinders standard.
Engine Horsepower 110 more horsepower (260 vs 150).
Engine Torque 77 more ft/lbs of torque (232 vs 155).
Performance tires standard, versus not available.
Length 29 inches longer (192 vs 163.3 which may be an advantage).
Width 2.3 inches wider (70.6 vs 68.3 which may be an advantage).
Rear Tread Width 2.1 inches greater rear tread width (60.9 vs 58.8).
Now, of course we all know there are people out there with Volkswagens that are modded to hell and back but your chances of finding one that will smoke a CL S are slim to none.

Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. I used to own a Scirrocco myself and people look at me like I'm crazy. Most people don't even know what a Scirocco is but I loved the hell out of that car. By the way, a guy in the S2K forum asked me what the hell a Volkswagen Scirocco is and I had to give him a full history and slide show on the car. He thought it was a peice of shit until he found out the Scirocco (Wolfsburg edition) could out accelerate a 944. As for the GTI it's an ugly peice of garbage. The CL is a much sexier car. As a matter of fact I read an article somewhere where they said the American designers had the Bentley in mind when they were designing the CL3.2 Type S.

I love when disagreements happen on these threads because you're comparing apples to oranges. The CL-S is a luxury sport coupe and the GTI is a sport compact, two distinctly different cars all together, but both capable and nice looking cars. Just see eye to eye and the world will be a much more enjoyable place for all of us. ("Ebony and Ivory" playing in back ground)

I had a '79 Scirocco, gold, lowered, no cat, no mufflers (straight T-304 SS piping), 4spd, front black air dam, and aftermarket rims and wheels. And damn that car was fun to drive. It got off the line really fast. I could bury the speedo needle and I really had no idea how fast I was going after 100 mph.
-I also owned a (180hp)1.8T(had TCS) and VR6(No TCS) Mk4 5spds. Those were also very fun as well.

I have raced a GTI anniversary edition 1.8T 6spd. He had I/E and downpipe and me in my 03 AV6 Coupe auto w/CAI at the time. We both dyno'd at apex, him at 176whp and 184wtq and me at 198whp and 181tq. We had 3 races from 0-90mph and each time I had him by 1-2 car lengths. Its definantly a drivers race between a stock CL-S and a GTI with the CL-S having the better top end. His high end started to fade because i did most of my pulling 60MPH+.

If anyone knows what a VW engine can do I sure as hell do, and I wouldn`t mess with a modified Scirocco or a GTI. I put a MANY people to shame in my Scirocco back in the 80`s. It was particularly easy back in the day because Chevrolet and Ford were both putting out heavy ass, underpowered cars back then.
I wasn't directing that at you USURPER, it was more toward 01clsstock who was calling the GTI a shoe. It's all good.
