Is the '01 CL type-s worth getting???
I am really in love with this car and want it so bad, only thing preventing me is the problems with the automatic transmissions. I read through the forum up there and all i see if red flags, but i still for some reason still want the car.
So my questions are...
1) What is the percentage chance of if failing?
2) If i buy it used for a dealership, will the warrantee cover it still?
3) If i buy it from a used car lot, will the warrantee still cover it?
4) Is it worth getting at this point in time now that 7 years from an '01 is basically over?

It's a really nice car but if you can't afford a replacement or to pay at least half the cost than i'd look at another car, unless you can find one that has had the transmission replaced than by all means jump on it.

The tranny as 7 years 100k miles which ever comes first. I don't know what ur spending limit is, but, try to find a later year with low miles. All around, great car. This December makes three years with 90K. I still grin from ear- to-ear when i see it every morning

i want a lip..
i have an 01 cls... it was either that or an 01 integra gsr with the same mileage... of course, out here in fresno, ca, integras get stolen left and right... sad....
thats why i got the cls... no one wants to steal it cause no one needs parts from it!
as for problems with the transmission, if it has less then 109k's on it, i believe that dealerships should replace it due to the recall (if it hasn't been done already)...
theres a thread here in the 2nd gen cl forums, titled "transmission recall Q & A's"... or something like that... just browse around..
anyways, all in all, the cls is an awesome machine man, rides as smooth as a babies bottom and man... it kicks with WOT... haha. its nice, love her... i call her michelle.

bye Acura, hello Toyota
Welcome to the site & to the money pit! I too own an '01 CLS (SSM) w/roughly 108K miles w/still the stock tranny & still shifting strong....(fingers crossed). You'll find a vast array of knowledgeable folks here, & the info is always top knotch..imo
nx_kid: why don't you check out the bay area meets section & see if you can attend the upcoming one on 12/8...always glad to see another CL or CLS on the meets so my car doesn't feel lonely...
That's why I'm always glad whenever either Klepto (moderator/ace photographer) w/ 1st gen CL &/or gc86 show up...

If you want an 01 CLs try to get a low mileage one. Actually, if you really want one your best bet is is an 03 for an AT as they have less problems in comparison to total units sold. If you get an At you are covered up to 93 months or 109k miles I believe. Your best bet really is to get an 03 6 speed MT all things considered...more power to the wheels and less tranny problems. If I could do things again I would have waited and found an 03 6MT...

140,000 miles young
Most 03 AT's aren't covered by the warranty. I had the opportunity to buy an 01 CL-S with 95k on it in June and I bought it. It's on the original tranny, and has no problems at all. I did pony up an extra 20 bucks a month on the payoff for a 2 year powertrain warranty from the dealer, so if the tranny blows in the next year and a half it is replaced for free - might not be a bad idea if you are concerned.
get the damn car!

01 CL tran fluid change
I bought an 01 CL type S from a guy with 63k miles on it. He told me he hadn't done the 60k service yet and I had the trans looked at and it was very dirty, they changed the fluid out and recommended I bring it back in about 10k for another change since it was so dirty. I have notice a big change in the shifting just in the change in fluid. I hope there was no damage, otherwise it seams to shift fine. I guess I better check to see if it needs to be changed out under the recall, but my question is:
Did it matter on the 01 CL Type S if you were having problems or not, did they still change out the trans?
Thanks

haha, thats soooo true about the wishing you could have a 6sp when you own a AT... but i believe it would also be the other way around... if you have a 6sp, you'd want an AT cause you'd get tired of shifting and what not.... humans, always want what we can't have... :P

i thought the AT was cool because the had the sport shift feature which isnt manual, but it is in a way
just to get it in the air, i dont know how to drive a stick shift car, i am willing to learn, but i dont have any cars around to learn on, my friend has a SER spec-v, but he doesnt let anybody drive his car that know how to drive stick, so i wont even bother asking his i can learn on his car.
overall though, i think i am going to pass up on the CL, i really want the car, but i dont have the money to buy a 6-speed and i dont want to take my chances on an auto, so i am most likely going to get a mazda6 s. It is about the same price and the AT is 6-speed with sport shift so thats a plus.

I would buy the Acura. The only huge problem they have is the tranny. If the car hasn't already had another transmission installed before then it is almost a guarantee that it will go out before the warranty expires. I would get the vin for the CL and call a Acura dealer. They can tell you if it had been done and how much longer you have left on the warranty. It will depend on when it was sold new. My CLS lasted till 94k before the tranny was toast. My 01 TL just got its second tranny at 99k. I
