01 CL-S vs Jetta 1.8T
Last week I was cruising down the highway to my favorite fishing spot with my buddy when I see this Jetta weaving up through traffic. I think he was trying to catch up to this a really nice STi in front of us. When he finally caught up to the STi he reved a few times and I heard his BOV. I seen the guy in the subaru chuckle and turn off at the next exit. That put me next to the jetta at the light. He revved at me and traffic was clear so I revved back. I turned off VSA and shifted down into 1. Light turned green and we were off. I got a small jump at the begining because he was spinning through 1st. He pulled hard through second though and put his rear bumper at my front. I stayed in the same position the whole way through 3rd and surprisingly he didn't gain any when I shifted to 4th. I slowed down as my exit approached and he kept going. Oh well, I lost to a jetta but I think he had more than BOV. No excuses though. Run what you brung.

Jettas are not that fast even chipped. he must have had a few more things done to beat even a stock CLS. No shame in losing to one though.
Funny because if he struggled against you the STi would have raped him even with a mediocre launch!

You got the jump on him and he caught you in 2nd gear but then couldn't pull after that... Since you were gate shifting I'm thinking you didn't use the whole RPM range in 1st and 2nd. If he truly did have a beast under his hood then it seems he would have continued to pull through every gear...especially 4th. BTW, since 3rd gear gets us to over 100mph and you say you shifted into 4th then you two were really haulin' for a public road.

Learn to drive. You shouldn't be loosing to a Jetta unless he's chipped. I burned a stock Jetta 1.8T with just CAI, I got the jump and walked easily.

Anyways, all shifts were at 6700RPM. The road is not straight or flat (none in western PA are) and when I was in 3rd I was on the inside of a gentle curve. I also had my buddy (250+) and all of our fishing gear in the car. He had his gf and a stereo system (I could hear it) in the car. Gotta go. I'll post later.

I had one person, 2 fishing poles, and 2 tackle boxes.
He (the Jetta) had one person, and a stereo system that I know of.
The handicap would be close. The Jetta was quicker than expected. I've driven, been a passenger in, and raced against 1.8T cars. Even if we were both empty and conditions were perfect I would still lose. It had better P/W ratio.
