01 CL-s dependability?

Hey all, first post here. Ive got a few dumb quesitons here because im new to these cars. I was wonderin how dependable they were, how many miles can generaly be put on them before large problems happen(i know it depends on the driver too but in general here), how much it usualy costs to get problems fixed(breaks, exhaust, lights, oil?) and are these cars worth the 15K+ paid for them. The reason im asking is because Im goin away for college next year and I want something good on gas that has power and dependability with some class to spare. I had a 98 prelude before and I loved it but how would these two compare with performance and afordability? Any help would be great! Thanks

We have a forum dedicated to transmission problems....

https://acurazine.com/forums/automotive-news-6/

Not all CL's have tranny problems, but if I had to guess, I'd say that 10-15 percent of the people here have had at least one transmission replaced...

If your budget is $15+ then you should look into getting a 6spd... That's what I did...

< when i joined acurazine i had 23000miles, today just passed 75000miles. Few minor issues including a new tranny around 30000milles, but other than that its been gas and go... upkeep costs are minimal

Really? In general how many miles can these cars usualy go? I mean I've seen older hondas that are around 500K....and i know it all depends on how yuo care for your car but if you keep your car clean and get the services done when needed, how long do yall think this car could last. The one im lookin at has 76K and its an 01...new tranny at about 56K miles

If you keep up with transmissions, it could last forever...

Kris has a 2000 TL that has gone thru 5 transmissions in 200K miles, so he's given up, and is doing a 6spd converison...

I'm at 110K, and I had one tranny replaced at 65K... I think for the money, its well worth the cash. Its fast, looks hot, and you get 350 miles to the gallon. An intake/headers for performance will just about take out every other 6 cyl on the road and lowering springs with some 19's and you can kill em out on the streets. What else are looking at for that kinda cash??

Yeah, all these are good points. What would yall pay for a 01 type S with 76K miles? Dealer is askin 14900. Black on black with spoiler and navi. Wheels are scratched, lugnuts lookin a lil rusted...paint is good, interior is great. Any ideas on how much I should offer so i dont get raped?

You could get a 6 speed with a few more miles on it for 15k if you find the right seller. I now have 107k on my 6speed, no problems with the clutch or engine, just regular maintenance.

Depending on the oil you go with, you're only putting in a little under 5quarts and then a filter, which is still just cheap maintenance.

If you have more time, and are willing to travel for a car, definately go looking for a 6 speed somewhere for around 15k.

I've got about 72K on my 01 CLs. Still a pretty solid car. I had the tranny replaced at about 44K.

So in all your wonderful opinions, is this car worth the FINAL purchase price of 16700 with 76600K miles, black on black and navi? I mean are there any other cars that could compete with this?

First off, it depends on your dempgraphic region...
In other words, prices vary through out the united states, by way of the economy and the cost of living where you live. I live in New England (Where the cost of living is comparable to California's) and a car like that would go for around the price you are quoting and if not, more! For example, if presuming that the car has a spoiler on it, you can click the following link to see waht Kelley Blue Book says the retail value is in my demographic area, and compare it to yours.

http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/kw.kc.u...;;ucr;&6;AC;AC

You see that here, the average retail is $16,800 for an 01 with navi, spoiler and is in Excellent condition (in other words, no defects or blemishes AT ALL).

Sorry, I realized that my link didn't work and once again Acurazine Administrator has made it impossible for me to change the previous post, because I had took to long... (more than five minutes... excuse a guy for being busy while typing)
anyways...
I found this information at Kelley Blue Book (DOT) com and most people know about it... check it out if you want to know a good price for your region.
here goes...

I was at the dealership today (getting my tranny looked at) and I saw 01 Cl-s going for around 15-16 up here. That is my point about demographic. I know for a fact, that when I go down south (ie: NC or FL) it is a lot cheaper... Nothing bad about the places, I'm actually jealous that I don't live there, but the truth is we make more up here (as compared to the same job there) because the cost of living is more.
I always hear about how much an auction is cheaper, but I have never been to one... wish I could get a new TL at one, I don't care about how smashed it was. I just don't feel like paying $35k for a car, when I have such negative equity on a trade in (01 CL). Payments would be about $750 a month, without a trade in... Nevermind having $6k in Neg. Equity.

Alright well around here there arent many of these available at all, i'd have to drive a few hundred miles to get to the closest one with everything im lookin for. ALSO!! Before I make an offer....have any of you ever shifted into reverse and heard a sound almost like the sound that an air compressor makes? It did this to me both times i had it in reverse today while testin it...and after shifting to drive both of those times, the same noise happened again. I dont know much about these cars and im tryin to get to know it before i dive in head first!

I have an automatic, and I have never heard this sound you speak of. Although, until recently I also never had any problems with my tranny period. Right now, I am getting the front motor mount replaced and the tranny is being replaced because of slipping. I also have an automatic, I am not sure if you have said wether it was an auto or 6 speed.
