Need to get new tires as the stock Michelin's have finally worn out.

I've done a lot or searching and reading and the general consensus around here seems to be that the Bridgestone Potenza RE960 A/S are the preffered tire followed by Yoko's Avid V4S'.

How do those A/S' compare to a dedicated summer?

I've narrowed the choices down. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm leaning towards the Fuzion's right now.

All Season's

Yokohoma Avis V4S
Goodyear Eagle F1 AS

Summer's

Fuzion ZRi

I've heard nothing but good things about the Yoko Avid V4s.

You may want to double check the Avons.
I read on TireRack.com that the sidewall "strength" may be insufficient for the pig...I mean TSX. However, that comment was on the M550 A/S.


When it's time for me to get new tires, I'm going Yoko.

Anytime you go with an all-season, you are introducing some sacrifice into the equation. But even with your tendencies for taking corners at higher speeds, I think you are likely better off with all-seasons since having summer only tires means a separate set of tires (or even wheels and tires) for the winter.

The real question is: are you ready for dedicated winter wheels? If so, go with summers.

I just ordered a new set of staggered wheels for myself today for my summer setup. After my research, I'm going with the Pirelli PZero Nero. I can do this confidently since I've got skinny 17x7s with Blizzaks for wintertime. Where you are, with real winters, it would have to be a necessity with anything like the Fusion ZRis.

BTW: Consumers panned the Fusion ZRis as well as the Avon M500's. I'd stick to the Pirellis, Contis, or Potenzas.

Although, for an All Season, I'd go with the Yokos. I put AS430s on our old accord before we sold it and they were quiet in the summer and worked well through winter. The V4s are supposed to be even better in both than the 430s, just with a little higher pricetag.

I guess I was wondering how those High Performance All season's compare to dedicated summer's as far as handling and in particular wet handling goes. I'd like something that has decent tread life as well. How much tread life am I sacrificing with summer's?

And there's not many dedicated summer's available in a 215/50. The Fuzion's and Avon's seem to have good test results at Tirerack.

I run the Bridgestone Potenza's and they are 10x better then the stocks. A lot more grip to the road and better on turns. I'm looking into some rims now but not sure if its worth just getting 17's

Dom, how many miles did you get out of your OEM shoes?? Just trying to gauge myself when I might need to change. I realize driving habits have a lot to do with it, but I was just curious.

I've had them on since April of 03 but since I run winters from Nov to April its hard to say for sure. 118,000 km's on the car now. (74,000 miles) I'd guess about 65,000 of those km's (40,000 miles) have been on the Michelin's.

I don't generally drive that hard. Except when I take turns at 53 MPH which I think is what CG was referring to earlier.

Out of all those tires, I would go with the Goodyear Eagle F1 A/S.

None of the summer only tires you have listed are any good. If you have to get summer only, get the General Exclaim UHP. They are labeled as M+S but they are summer only...I just got summer tires but they were out of the Generals in the size I wanted so I got Sumitomo HTRZ IIIs. We'll see how they turn out. But unless you are willing to get dedicated winter tires, don't purchase summer only tires.

I just put on the good year assurance.. its H vs V but has XL.. ill never hit above 100mph.. so wasn't a risk to me.. Treadwear 740, traction a, temp b

Look at Falken tires, i am using the Z512's as my summer tireon my '05 TSX, and they are way better then the stock. Or get the falken F452's, another very good summe tire

Can I ask why you feel that way? Both the Fuzion's and Avon are rated very highly at Tirerack and by most here as are the Kumho SPT's.

I am running dedicated winter's BTW.

I just ordered the Yokohoma Avis V4S for the stock rims. I'm getting them installed today. I had them on my RSX, a great tire.

But, if I got a set of aftermarket rims, I'd get summer tires & use the stock rims w/ snows for the winter.

It depends on how much you want to spend!!

Maybe fall and spring? Here in Colorado we don't really go straight from summer to winter, and summer tires make me nervous when we get snow in April and may or September and October.

Another thing to consider is that all-seasons generally have longer wear ratings on them compared to summer tires.

dom's in the same part of Canada that I am and I'm actually very interested in finding out what he goes with, since I've been contemplating what I'm going to do when the time comes to replace the stock tires.

Hey dom, I'm in Toronto as well (well, Markham) and I'll be purchasing the Yokohama AVID V4S, because the Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS are just WAAAYYYY too expensive here.

I am in no way affiliated with them, nor am I advertising for them, but if you buy them from Steelcase Wheels & Mag, they have the cheapest price right now @ $159.50 a tire (if you can get them cheaper, hook me up too! ), and I called a whole bunch of Yokohama distributors in Markham area from the Yokohama Canada site and all of them were at least $15 dollars more for each tire.

PLUS! Yokohama Canada is having "The Yokohama Canadian Performance Rebate" so you can get an $80 MIR for the AVID V4S until June 30th, 2008. It's one heck of a deal, you can get the MIR form from the Yokohama Canada website.

Dom I'd jump on Dixon's deal IMO. Never heard anything bad about the V4S.

Also, don't just check tirerack, look at consumer reports. They have bad things to say about the Fuzion and especially the Avon M 500. Treadlife, noise, and rolling resistance were the concerns; more than just the usual "these have felt good to me" reviews on tirerack.

Wow no love for the S-Drive? It gets my vote for sure. Not to heavy, reasonable price, pretty quiet and good treadwear for such a good performing summer tire.

If money is no object take a look at the pirelli rosso. Had them on my is350 by far the best tire i have ever owned. But very expensive, and werent going to last very long.

General Exclaim UHP is an all-season tire, lightweight, and is affordable. I had them in 19s, used them all year around except winter (had OEMs for winter). They were great in rain and summer, never chirped and very good traction overall.

Falken FK-452 is an ultra high performance summer tire. It's price is in the mid-range, tread rating is 280 (lower compared to General Exclaim UHP). I am using it right now in 18s for pretty much all year round except winter. They are great tires with excellent grip in dry and wet situations.

The lower the tread rating, the stickier the tires. However, the drawback of a lower tread rating is that it will wear more quickly (in the context of a city, daily driven car).

If I were to buy again, I would pick General Exclaim UHP because it is affordable and lightweight. More weight in the wheel/tire combo robs horsepower, acceleration, and braking altogether.

Falken ZE-912 is a new all-season tire with performance in mind. It should offer a good balance of all-season and summer tires but also maintain performance characteristics. Check it out if you have a chance!

Yeah go with the Falken, i use them also and love them. If u can find the Falken 512 they are very good also.

Hmmm... so I went to the Steelcase to check out the tires a couple of days ago, and although they didn't have any stock of the V or W4S, they showed me a few other a couple of brands, one was the called Infinity, which I hadn't heard of before, and Falken.

Being the impressionable bastard that I am, I am now having some other thoughts about being 100% for the Yoko W4S, so now it's really between the Falken ZIEX ZE-912 and the Yokohama W4S. As well, unless I'm getting the 40 series version of the W4S, the sidewall of the Yoko looks really stupid, but that's just me, and I'm a nit picker.

The ZE-912 is about $20 (tax included) less per tire than the W4S, even after the $80 Yokohama rebate, and the sales rep was telling me how the ZE-912 was an assymetrical tire that could be rotated criss-cross later on and have more even tire wear, whereas the W4S can only be rotated front and back, and would experience 'cupping', something to do with the tread getting all jagged and stuff, sounded a little sketchy, but I did want to take that into account.

I have read some stuff on the forums here saying that the ZE-912 tends to suck at about 30% tread life, but I haven't heard anything bad about the W4S. I guess I really should go with the W4S, but what do you guys think?

Sorry for not getting back sooner but I missed this post. The Avons have a TERRIBLE treadwear...I owned the A/S version of those and anything under 75% treadlife caused my WRX to be terrible in the rain..and that was AWD. The Fuzions are rated worse than those on Tirerack. Both of those tires are a middle of the road tire and there are far better tires in that category that you could buy.

Looks like I'll be going with the General Excalim UHP's. Didn't think they were available in a 215/50/17 but according to their site and my local Canadian Tire they are. Also XL load rated. Price is $585 installed, including taxes.

I have the general exclaim now, they lasted about only 25,000 miles so maybe 2 summers worth and switched out winter tires here in buffalo.

I'm kind of not happy how fast the tread went down, but i guess cheap tires, and agressive driving. Did do autox once and it raped the tires haha...

Hey dom, I ended up getting AVID W4S, ~$744 CDN with tax, and so after the $80 MIR brings me down to 664, which isn't bad (whenever I get back that MIR; always take forever, those things). Getting them installed right now. Just an update haha.

Just got off the phone with Tire World in Brampton.

They want $154 per tire installed and balanced + tax for the V4S's, which works out to $696.

I'm trying to decide between the General's and Falkens but at $616 after rebate those Yoko's are a possibility. 500 tread wear rating vs 380 for the General's.

It appears to me that this discussion is mainly about OE size replacements (try reading all of the posts); I see little mention of optional sizes. And I'm mistaken on the availability of the Exclaim UHP in the OE size; they recently introduced the correct 215/50x17 93V tire.

About $25 more per tire in this case. $86 each on tire rack. I'm paying $110 each or $127 each installed. That $585 was with 13% taxes added.

And ya, it looks like General just recently added the 215/50/17 to that line as it wasn't coming up 2 weeks ago on Tire Rack but it is today.

dom 380 treadware is pretty bad, but then again the tire guy explained to me treadware isn't a standard, its just how well the last to the companie's test.

So 380 vs 500 might be 380 vs 420 really since two different companies.

The guy also told me that any speed rated tires have no warranty or at most is 30k max.
