Slashed tire sidewall: can it be fixed?

I just helped my parents change a tire on my TSX not far from my house. They say they were on their way home when my dad felt something was wrong with the tire. I saw the damage right away, they must have hit some debris because the front tire had an inch-long slash all the way through the sidewall, you can see the inside of the tire.

Are sidewall punctures fixable? Do I have to get a new tire? I was planning on getting a new set for next year so it would suck to have to get a new set now. I know of a used tire place, but I'm sure it's not easy finding a single 235/40-18 tire in Ottawa...

I don't think so. Shops probably won't fix them either but you can always try.

What's the best bet for getting a used tire then? Going to a used tire shop and trying to find a similar tire, or getting one new one?

Well, if you don't have that many miles on the opposite side tire, you can just get the same. but as CCC told me yesterday, getting a newer tire for both sides are better, especially not the stock Michellin Tire, because those can run about 200 bucks. And that's one hell of a setback. Getting a nice pair of Falken's will run you about 77 bucks each, which is much better.

Anything outside the tread shouldn't be plugged or repaired. Most places won't even repair damage on the tires shoulder.

Oh, and please don't buy a used tire on your car. Treat it like an Acura.

Belzebutt: Just FYI -- the OEM tire is on at costco for abuot $259.99 on Merivale road. That's INSANE (waaaaay overpriced for the quality of tire).

If your other 3 tires are getting within 5mm of needing replacement, I'd try getting an entire set of replacement tires (something much cheaper and a lot stickier) and selling the 3 good ones to a used tire shop, or selling them in the Black Market section here for people who might be looking for one or two tires like you are now.

The OEM tires are ass... and I'd be looking to replace them ASAP.

I just bought the Khumo Ecsta ASX all-sesons off TireTrends.com. The description on their website describes my choice pretty well: "the ECSTA AST is the perfect choice when the desire for larger rims meets a slim budget."

It's a new tire so there's not that many reviews but the ones I've seen seem faily ok. I'll decribe my impressions here.

A good friend has those on her 1996 EL and LOVES them. They are a really nice tire.

(However I could have got you a discount from www.shopcms.com as I know the owner quite well... he'll beat TireTrends prices 100% of teh time because he started that company waaaay back in the day, LOL).

How do I apply for this discount? They haven't called me to confirm the order yet...
