Rim width and tire choice

Should the rim width effect the size tires I pick? As an example; I wanted the Faulken 912 in a 225/40 18. Faulken's tire size chart recommends 7.5-9.0 rim width with that tire. My rims from Centerline are 18-7 +42. So, that tire on that rim would be 'pushed' taller? If thats the case; isn't our TSX tire chart missing a rim-width spec to be accurate with tire size suggestions? 225/40 18 shows a '-2.7%' difference which is not recommended. The Faulken 225/45 18 is recommended on a 7" rim, up to 8.5. Our tire size chart puts that tire size right at 2.0%–which would be at the + limit.

i thought the same thing about the chart when i was buying new wheels recently. it would be nice to be able to relate rim width to tire size. if i were you i'd try pm-ing tsxrocket. he is a wheel and tire wholesaler so he should be very knowledgeable on the subject....

I see a discrepancy between the AZ Tire Chart, and Faulkens Tire Chart with stated RPMs per tire size. I would imagine, every manufacturer's RPM spec will be slightly different, i.e., Faulken's: 215/40ZR18 RPM 834, AZ: 215/40-18, RPM 804. So, the Faulken's (912) are, smaller(?).

The width is perfectly fine, but with my experience, that tire is 26" tall. Thats the only issue. It'll fit just fine on your wheel though. You really won't need to worry about fitment issues, only your speedo. I'd run a 225/40R18 still though. Better size for our TSX.

I understand–but, since I'm hung-up on the Faulken 912, their approved rim sizes are: 7.5-9.0 for the 225/40-18. With their specs run on a 7.5" rim. My rim size will be 7.0 18s. So, the tire (225/40 18) would be push taller(?)

Keep in mind a tire chart only provides a suggested size that would fit your car or how close it is when comparing to the oem. Just because it says 225/40/18 doesn't mean all manufactures and tire models have the exact sectional width, height, and thread width. If you ask your local tire dealer to pull 10 tires of the same size, but from different manufactures or models, you may be surprised that not all of them measured the same. Therefore, you really need to look at the actual tire spec not just the "advertised" tire size. Some 225/40 tires can be as wide and tall as a 235/40.

Gotcha, and thanks, JTso. The AZ tire guide is a good place for general sizing against OEM; but the actual indiv. manufacturer's specs would be more precise. I think most of us want simple answers–such as tire sizes (KISS) but the more we learn, the more info there is to sift. lol

Kudos to tsxrocket, for his patience and expertise in deciding tire-size, and, his better than any-other price; for the 912 Faulkens. I could not find a better price–including shipping.
