Is this light weight?

Hey guys,

I have decided to pick up a set of Motegi Racing US7's they are a machined finish with a anthracite accent. My main reason for doing the swap is because mesh wheels are a pita to clean and since they are not of any name brand they are heavy as hell.

I understand Motegi is a reputable company which develops rather light weight wheels?

Online the wheel is described as being an 18x7.5" with a offset of + 45.

They weigh approximately 29.8lbs a piece, does this weigh too much? How is compared to stock?

Heres a picture of the exact wheel;

lightweight?

I would say no way, not even close.

stock rims only weight 21-23 lbs each from what I've read.
these will be much, much heavier.

the rims I ordered will be roughly the same size, but they'll
weigh less than 20lbs each.

if you want lightweight, you need to look into forged wheels.
the wheels I ordered are made with MAT technology.

you need to look at higher priced brands.

You must have ordered Enkei wheels since they are the only company that calls their forging process MAT Technology. But in reality all rolling forging technology is the same from Rays to Enkei. But to the OP you want to go with forged rims if you want light weight rims. Anywhere between 17-20lbs for 18 in rims would be considered light weight

I was lookin at the Enkei's also. I then found Kosei
Offset: 42mm

Backspacing: 5.87"
Bolt Pattern: 5-114
Rec. Tire Size: 215/45-18
Weight: 16.0lbs.

Should be in next week. I only hope they look good on the car.

Here is a link to the info...

Those are really light for 18 in wheels. Next to magnesium wheels, thats one of the lighter wheels that I've seen

I ordere AME rims, which is the upscale division of Enkei.

and it's not just some typical forging process either, I think you need to look into
it a bit more. Funny how they have patents if it's "just the same process."

the AME's I ordered will weigh in around 17-18 lbs each for 18x8x+48.

I read Enkei's press release on MAT forging a few years back and seem to me like the typical rolling forging process. Might be some differences but rolling forging process is rolling forge. As opposed to companies like Rays where they even forge the faces of the rim, Enkei take a cast wheel and forges inner drum using rolling forge process. MAT=Most Advanced Technology. Besides forged rims is forged rims, take a giant press and compress the crap out of the metal where by using rollers or press. Whether its done hot/cold/warm

Industrial processes like that are always patented. It's purely a marketing thing. The patent means nothing as all one needs to do is make a small alteration to the process and now you can patent that and use it freely.

I've worked in the manufacturing industry and this is standard operating procedure.

This rims look nice, but NOT light rims. Motegi does make some light rims but not this one. As people have already mentioned, this rims is about 7lbs more than stock 17".

My 18" Wedsport SA-70 is 18.2lbs on the scale, 18X8 +45.

I use the simplified method of 1" per pound for quick wheel weight comparison. If the wheel is 17", then 17 lbs is not bad. My SSR 18x8 weights 16.7 lbs.

Thats a good choice on a light weight wheel. I've seen it on a TSX and while it looked small at 18 inches, will look good with a decent drop
