Thumbs up Just bought some Goodyear GTs

So I bought the Goodyear GTs yesterday since I got a pretty decent deal. It was just under $700 for a set of 4 with mount, balance, disposal, alignment, labor and tax. They actually matched TireRack's price so it saved me time from ordering and waiting. I was down to 4/32 but I could tell when I was checking with Abe, they were starting to wear unevenly. Also, I wanted piece of mind driving cross country.

I previously had the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and performance was ok but what really annoyed me was road noise. Maybe it was because it was getting down to it's last legs on treadwear.

Enter the Goodyear GTs. I read a lot of good things about this All Season tire. I was looking for a comfortable ride with less road noise and didn't really care for Y or Z rated tires (which could have affected road noise)...not as if I ever get past 85 that much anyway.

Here are the stats on the tire:

Size: 235/45ZR17
Serv. Desc: 94W
UTQG: Treadwear: 400
Traction: AA
Temperature: A400 AA A

I had a chance to drive on them last night after I picked up my car. The weather conditions currently in the DC metro area is mid 40s and rainy.

Let me tell you the traction on wet roads with this tire is great. It feels like I'm driving on dry roads. With such a aggressive tread pattern, it just wicks away the rainwater and any puddles in its path.

The noise is much much better than the Michelins like we didn't already know anything is better than Michelins out there. I haven't even broke them in yet and they sound twice as quiet (even in the rain) than the Mich's did.

So far I've only driven about 20 miles but for the price, these are a great buy right now. I'll give you my thoughts later on when I get to do some semi-spirited driving when it drys up next week.

fyi also, my car is lowered on Tokico HPs/Tein H-Techs. It also has a Progress RSB.

Treadwear 400? It'll last you a LONG time.

If possible, I'd like to ask you for the gas mileage after about a month of driving. My guess is that it's a trade off between good wet-traction and gas mileage, but I could be wrong.

With the Mich's, I got around 32-34mpg on just the highway. I got about 24-27 in the city/highway and around 23-25 in city driving. This is using gas from Shell and Exxon mostly.

I would like to add also that there's a $20 mail in rebate too so not too shabby of a deal.

New tires are normally very quiet. They are likely to get louder after you break them in and drive on them for a while. Right now they're still letting out the oils used to keep the rubber from sticking to the mold. I'd love to know if you notie a difference after 5,000 miles. That's usually when tires have completely broken in and are as they will be for the rest of the tires's life.

Did you mount those on stock 17 x 7s? I have been going back and forth about getting that tire size. Some say the 235 is too wide others say no. Just want to know due to the fact tires are going to be a purchase soon.

Since there was no more rains in the DC Metro area, I had a chance to see what these were like on the dry pavement.

1st thing I have noticed is that they are a lot more quiet than my Mich's. I could actually hear other cars tires noticeably louder driving beside me. The GTs do have some noise but overall much better than the previous tires.

The grip felt better and there's more traction. I made a couple passes at around 55-65 with ease. I got onto an off ramp around 55 with good grip on the tires.

I did some cornering at around 35 and the walls felt soft. I usually don't drive like this but wanted to see the threshold. It would probably do ok around 50 but probably couldn't get pushed further, I wouldn't want to anyway.

Other than that, all is good for my 1st 100 miles on the tires. I'm taking a smaller road trip this week for about 450 miles. I'll make a couple of more postings later.

The optional tire size is 225/45/17, hope that 235 is a typo.

This is a good question since even though you can (and it seems some to many have) mount a 235/45 size tire on the TSX OE wheels, it's not recommended. Most tire manufactures specify at least 7.5" wide, with many going to no less than 8" (the OE size wheel on the 04-08 TL for instance which is equipped with 235/45x17's as OE). Just because you can do it doesn't make it right.

The 225/45x17 is actually the same diameter as the 205/50x17 size tire (I used both sizes on an Audi S4 I once had)(not at the same time). The correct plus zero (same diameter wheel, lower aspect ratio) for the OE 215/50x17 is in fact 235/45x17 (to keep the same diameter). And the OE wheels are really too narrow for either size by the way.

I drove with these babies across country and they're still great. The performance was excellent in wet weather with heavy downpours. Road noise is still better than my Mich's.

My drive was from DC to CLT to ATL then across on the 20 to the 40 and all the way over to LA.
