How much will chrome wheels slow down my car?

I swapped my 17" stock wheels on my tsx for 18" kazerra kz-s chrome plated wheels. I timed my 0-60 before and after the wheel swap and noticed about a second different in my time. Could this be right? How much weight difference is there between the stock wheels and 18" chrome wheels? I was also thinking about getting rid of the chrome wheels and getting 14 lb 17" wheels!

Holy crap- a second? Its not the chrome....its the 18 in diameter of the wheel if anything. Those wheels are 19+ pounds, which makes them lighter than stock. However, since our cars are torque challenged to begin with, I could see why changing the diameter affects acceleration. I just never saw it to be that much of a difference.....are you sure its a whole second, under the same conditions except for wheels?

that doesnt sound right to me either. There's got to be other factors to that extra second.

It shouldn’t be that much difference between the stock and aftermarket rims, maybe an extra 20 lbs total at the most. Other factors could cause the extra second times:
- full tank of gas, 1 gallon of gas weighs about 7 lbs, 17 gallons = 119lbs
- junk in your trunk that added extra weight
- cold engine, exhaust, tires, tranny
- tire pressure too low
- fuel quality: detergents, additives, oxygenated fuel
- road conditions during test (incline, decline, poor traction, wet)
- weather conditions (too hot/cold, cross/head wind)
- technique used during 0-60 drag, rpms too low during start
- 18 inch rims/tires affecting speedo, you could be off 3-5 mph
- stop watch might be off or exact timing of mph to time is off

If the rims look good, I would keep them. The TSX will never lay down 100 feet of double-tracks of burning rubber from a stop light.

I can notice the difference and my 18" only weigh in at 16.5 lbs each.

It's kinda interesting. It's seems slower anytime that I need to get rolling from a standstill. But if I'm already rolling, then the acceleration feels a little bit faster. I haven't done the switch recently, so I'm going from memory though. I'll have to check it out again. I'll probably put my wheels back on soon. The tread on my OEMs is starting to go.

Yeah, they are pretty light. They are 8" wide too. I wonder how light the 18x7.5 version is.

I was worrying about the same thing when I put rims on my old Civic... I found this cool excel spreadsheet that will give you an idea how changing the wheel size and weight will change the acceleration:

http://www.mazda6tech.com/files/rotational.xls

Some cool (but basic) physics in there... nice to see it being applied in real life
