HELP- Tein coilover install problem

Take a look at these pics. That definitely does not look right. I double checked the parts diagram and I know I used all of the parts it called for. Was I supposed to use the stock bumpstops on the shock, or the Tein ones? I need the car tomrrow so I have to figure this out ASAP. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
James

That is definitely wrong. Right under the washer should be the stock upper mount, and the whole thing is way too high.

there should be a large ring of rubber around that part sticking out, did you not install that? if you did, then the whole thing should be grabbed and held down beneath the suspension hole.

I would think to use the Tein bumpstops.

Use this pic as reference. Make sure #6 (rubber cushion) is placed on top and under the upper mount #7.

Everything is exactly as it is in teh diagram. Even matches the diagram from Tein that came with it. When I pulled the stock suspension out, I used some spring compressors and pulled the stock top mount out. It transferred directly to the Tein coilovers. The stock top mounts came out in one piece so I don't see how I could be missing anything......

well you're missing something, because it looks like the springs are compressing w/o the shock, hence the shock is sticking waaay out. witht he proper mount, the shock should stop right at the mount and compress in its body.

Do you have item #9 (washer) on the bottom of #6 (lower rubber cushion)? Because if you don't, it will end up exactly like your current situation.

Btw, why don't you remove the strut/spring assemby from the car and show us what it looks like.

I'll have to do that tomorrow. Might just wait until Sunday. I have another car I can drive if I don't get this fixed in time.

Thanks for the input.

All the parts are installed exactly as they came from tein, or off of the TSX.

Going to have to wait to pull them off and double check everything.

Problem solved

I fixed it. What I did was take each one off and pull the Tein dust cover out and use the stock one. The stock one has a hard metal spacer built in that keeps the shock valve from pushing up too much.

Woohoo. Time for a test drive now.

that's a bit disturbing, why do they include the wrong dust cover? unless possibly something is different about the CL7 which these were made for?

Well I've been driving around most of the day and am very happy with them. I'll experiment with the shock settings over the next few weeks. I have them on 8 right now which is right in the middle.

I'll try and get some pics taken tomorrow. I want to let the springs settle and adjust them up a little higher. Just a tad too low for me right now.

I just puled one of my stock struts out of its box; #9 washer holds the strut down, and it's pretty thick. The washer on the dust cover is not very thick. If it lets go, the strut rod is gonna bust through your hood

Man wouldn't you know, that's what happened tonight onthe way home. Not busted through the hood, but the front right popped out and is sticking up again. It's not out enough to touch the hood thanksfully. Guess I'll be spending the morning working on the car again

I think I know the part you are talking about. I'll head down to the garage and snap a pic and post it.

#13 is also important and should be on top of the bump stop.

So #13 is teh gold and large silver washers, adn #9 is the black spacers, which means I am missing one black one.

The gold spacer is for the front and the thicker one is for the rear. It depends on what came with your new suspension and the size of the shaft. Some systems require you to reuse some of the original hardware and some will require new hardware due to the shaft dia. and they are generally included with the package. But you should always have the same amount of hardware on the new system regardless if you are using some or all of the original stuffs.

My Koni system provide new #17, 5, 15, 9 & 13, but requires enlarging the hole for the original #12.

Well I've got the drivers side done now. Have to go to lowes and pick up a new spacer for the #9 as I've lost one. I am able to reuse all of the stock parts.

Do you mean the new suspension didn't include new hardware and you didn't reuse the stock ones?

Thankfully, the spring rates on the Tein are high enough, or you didn't hit a big enough bump to damage the hood......

The Tein instructions show the proper integration of the stock parts and the parts that supply. You can download them from their website if they didn't come with the kit......

The instructions from Tein are crap!!

From the other question, I meant that I used the stock spacers. The Teins did not come with new ones.

To be honest they are not that bad......

You know, they kinda expect that you know how to do installs before you even crack open the box. I f you REALLY need the instructions you are already taking chances. These are really not meant for DIYers.

I have never had an issue with Teins. Hell, I barely even use the instructins, except when I use an EDFC

But, I have made the error of leaving out the #9 washer before on my first spring install ever, way back in 1997. That is why I recognized it right away

I have done suspension work on my other honda's and my Jetta as well. i guess I was used to having new parts already on the shocks so the only thing I had to transfer over was the top mount.
The car feels great now that everything is installed correctly. I took a nice off ramp on 405 this morning in Bellevue. I think a rear swaybar and some better rims and tires would really help set things up just perfectly.

Later,
James
