Help me choose new tires! (falken vs. kumho vs. yoko)

I've seen quite a few thread on tires, and have narrowed it down to three. As someone already posted, discount tire direct has a $100 off promotion right now, so I thought it'd be a good time to replace my OEM's with 43K miles on them. After reading some reviews, I've narrowed it down to these:

option 1: Falken Ziex ZE-912 ($216 for 4) -- have read mixed things about these, Consumer Reports rated them the highest in a recent tire comparison they did.

option 2: Kumho Ecsta ASX ($316 for 4) -- had some Kumho's on my old civic and were pretty impressed with them.

option 3: Yoko AVID V4S ($416 for 4) -- have generally gotten quite positive reviews.

I'm tempted to try out the Falken's, and the price doesn't hurt either! I do want a decent tire overall (balanced mix of good treadwear and good handling). Let me know what you guys think.

I am currently running Falken 512's in 225/40/18 and they have GREAT dry gripe, GOOD wet grip, and are a good overall performing tire. My only complaint is that since it a reinforced tire with the steel in them, the ride is much harsher than i would like and will not get a reinforced tire next time. They do get a little loud once you get some mileage on them but for the price (i only paid $103 each) they are a great deal!! The new 912's look very promising and for only $216 you CANNOT go wrong at all!

hey sorry what size am i looking for for the Falken Ziex's? Looking to order these tonight before that 100$ discount expires! my 44,000 miles tires got like 20% tread left.. and rains coming in ;X

edit:

215/50-17 <<-- is this the right size for OEM 2005 rims?

I've used the ZE-912's on a couple of cars. It's a good all around performer, although a little loud on the highway. A good choice for the money.

I decided to go with the Falken's. It came out to $204 shipped, which is not bad at all. as far as getting them mounted and balanced, do most tires shops let you install tires that weren't bought from them? I was thinking of getting them installed at costco once they come in. i'll post my impressions after i get them on.

I believe Costco only install the tires they sell because of the warranty issue, since they offer lifetime rotation, balance, and limited warranty. You can still call them and try, let me know what you find!

Made a mistake here; I've used a the 512's a few times. No experience with the 912's.

vthree, I got the stock size 215/50/17, each was $76, and then after $100 off came out to $204. I did take away the valve stems and certificates. Shipping was free and there was no tax for me as well (live in CA). You could try calling them if you have any issues.

plee9, how did you end up liking the yoko's?

yoko's are awesome. i used the stock tires: micheline mxm4 before so the smoothness of yoko's was very apparent to me. if you look at the handling under rain and snow, yoko's are pretty good because they are "ultra-performance" tires (not sure what that actually means). anyways, it was a good purchase to buy yoko's overall.

I've had the Falcons & I currently have the Yokohama V4S's... i have to say that based on my experiences & my friends' experiences, the Yok would be your best bet...Good wet/dry traction, good treadwear, and overall a good looking tire. Then again, anything is better than that crap that comes stock...

let me know on how you make out with the Falkens as well - i'm currently running the Bridgestone Potenza G009's. highly recommend them - but i'm open to other options.

I would always take Consumer Reports ratings with a grain of salt. They almost always pick the more practical, least exciting options instead of the 'best overall/best performing' options with regards to cars.

My experience with those tires has been very similar. They handle quite well, but are a little on the harsh side. They have solid steel band that runs down the center of the tire. Supposedly this is to help the tires to track straighter on the highway (they are very neutral so it seems to be doing it's job) but they make this sort of metallic ringing sound at times that I believe is a result of that belt. It's most noticeable at highway speeds when there are cracks in the road. You hear this pinging noise at every crack. It's not a major issue, it's just a strange sound to hear come from your tires.

I've only got 4k miles on them but I'm guestimating that at the current wear rate they'll last something like 12k to 15k. Seems reasonable for a decently performing tire at that price point.

Got the Yokos about 4,000 miles ago. Pretty impressed. These are my 3rd set of tires and they are by FAR the best set yet.
