Avon tires?

Any experiences with Avon tires? I think they're a company of Cooper... I was looking at these, seems to be a decent tire at a good price...

My OEMs are still in really good shape but when I do change, I'm going with the M500 (I don't need snow tires). Its very highly rated.

BTW, did you see the tire test on tirerack?

They are owned by cooper, but I don't believe they share much if any technology.

Where have I been, I've used these tires on my motorcyles for years but never knew they made automobile tires. The bike tires are all made in Britian and have always been very good.

I'll be buying a set of M500's this spring. I figure I can use my OEM Michelins in the winter (I've actually had good luck with them in ice and snow) and the Avons in summer and just swap them on/off my wheels. Or, buy new wheels with the money saved on the Avons.

I have the M500 since june and comparing to the previous tires (Yoko AVSes100) I can tell you the differences:

M500:
1. Confortable and quiet.
2. More grip on the wet.
3. Better bump absorb.
4. Last longer.

With the ES100 you have:
1. Better cornering response.
2. Felt more secure at high speed.

My next tires will be the BFGoodrige GSport in 235/45/17.

Let you known, for now the avons are at a great price.

JW because I'm going to get the M500's for my next set of wheels, what made you feel more secure at high speeds with the ES100?

Yeah, I've also read from the reviews that the Avon's doesn't have as good of a steering response as some of the other tires.... is this because of a softer/thinner sidewall? I'm a bit concerned about this and the NYC potholes...

Here is a test comparing the Avon M500 to 3 other tires (including the Yoko AVS ES100)

Also, a couple of more tests (all on Tirerack)

1. Steering response is tighter and quick on the ES100.
2. Less body roll on the turns.

I notice that the M500s are 25 lbs (in 215/50/17 size) and the stock Michelins are 23 lbs. That 2 lbs., especially on a tire, eats some wheel horsepower I think. Anyone have a sense for how much? I'm also looking at the ContiSportContacts, which are UHP all-season, highly rated on Tire Rack, and 22 lbs. Plus a higher tire-wear rating (400 vs. 280). Anyone have experience with the Continentals?

I think I answered my own question, Googling to find this analysis of rotational mass. It says, basically, that an increase in the unsprung rotating mass, like a tire, is equivalent to adding twice as much weight to the car's sprung, non-rotating mass. So, 2 lbs/tire = 16 lbs on the car.

I've also read, though, that the further from the rotational center (in this case, the hub) the weight is, the more effect it has on acceleration. I guess I just don't want to spend money on CAI's and exhaust, etc. only to decrease my acceleration with heavy tires. Thoughts?
