What the crap is a VW Corrado?

Anyone know anything about a small VW called a Corrado or something like that? I was on the highway the other day and got spanked. I was driving an old Accord, so maybe with a TSX it would have been different. Anyway, I pulled hard in first gear on him and then the little car just walked away from me. Those things are fast! It said VR6 on the back so I think that is VW language for a V-6 -- so that might explain it. It just seems crazy to put a 6 in such a tiny car.

Corrados were sweet, I wanted one back in the HS days. I think there have been o nly two models, a supercharged 4 and then a model with the vr6. They are pretty quick though not blazingly fast. Relatively light weight(I think less than the currently gti) and that small v6 is a good combo.

The Corrado was discontinued in 1994 I believe. The VR6 is 200hp and 0-60 in 6.5.

For its day the Corrado was an amazing little machine. I belive Porsche helped with the design and suspension. A VR6's a what VW calls a narrow angle V6's. Basically is like a squished inline 6 and the cylinders are offset just slightly vs. having a two seperate cylinder banks. This is an important configuration as the new W12's are based on it. _-_-_-

Didn't they discontinue them because they had horrible handling in wet weather? Most of my friends that are die hard VW fans, wish they could get their hands on a Corrado, so that must mean something.

Yeah, those things were pretty cool; an ex-coworker used to have one, but just the s/c 4 banger...

The VR6 is hot though, especially when the car is quite light (~2800lb!)

Come to think of it, haven't seen one of those in years... must be all dieing off.

A few years ago, a guy in my area had tuned a Corrado pretty well. Turboed his VR6. He kept going at it with another guy in a Viper. Was basically a toss of dice for the outcome.

Gave a hell of a good show.

Never heard of wet weather handling problem... something could be fixed by better tires?

Yeah, pretty sure Porsche has something to do with it... I think my ex-coworker's even had the 911-like automatic (can be manually overriden) reardeck wing that raises up at 80+ km/h... cool for sure, but functional???

The Corrado certainly was a nice little car and had tons of tuning potential. If you wanted to throw some money at it, there are a number of big name tuning companies for VWs that produced ridiculous engine modifications for the Corrado.

I think the new VR6 models (24 valve) have 200 hp. The older VR6 models (12 valve) have about 174hp.

The 12v top end leaves a lot to be desired but it pull nice and strong through the low end/midrange.

VW engines and Honda engines in this aspect are the complete opposite.

There's a modded out one that drives around the Hartford area during the summer. That thing is real fast...watched him light up a Z last summer....kicked his butt pretty good. I'm sure he has a turbo or S/C.

I live about 3 minutes from the most frequented strip by ricers in CT...damn ricers.

I'm right off the Pike too; as a matter of fact, I think I may take a ride up there tonight. Should be loaded with cars with weather like this.......

15° angle banks. That allows for the utilisation of a single cam for the 6 cyliders. It also means the engine remains naturally balanced, so basically the VR6 has all the advantages of a BMW I-6, but with the compacity of a V6.

It's an engine with good potential. The R32 is the latest version of the VRs and gives real nice power across the powerband.

SSM.....I'm fairly distinctive now that I'm running RSX-S 17"s and the OEM kit.

I didn't make it up there last night, but dammit, tonight I'm going. My wife went to bed early so I'm good to go.

...and it had one of those spoilers that deployed when you hit 50mph.
I remember going to the VW dealership to take a peek at this car.

Cool, I'll keep my eye out. I'm NHB, no body kit, with 35% tints and a lip spoiler.....and an Injen CAI if you have your ears open
