Article of Time Attack on Mofidied Mag

Woohoo......my car (the Prelude, of course) made it in Modified Mag. In June 06 issue, they have an article on the time attack at Calif. Speedway back in March this year. When I picked up the magazine, I flipped to the page of the article and saw what they wrote. At first, I was a bit disappointed to find that my picture wasn't on there, but they have a pic for the 2nd place car. Then I flipped another page and found a pic of my car. Yeeehaaaaaa..........

This is what they wrote about my class.

The Unlimited class caters to the all-out race cars allowing slick tires and lexan windows to be used. In the FWD category there were two entrants, Mike Kojima and his Nissan Sentra SER race vehicle and Vincent Wong in what looked to be a stock '98 Honda Prelude. Don't be fooled by the tame exterior because this Prelude laid down an astonishing 1:17:91 time to beat Kojima by almost two seconds! Kojima was a bit puzzled by the outcome because he maintains that he was on pace with Wong but his time wasn't, 1:19:42.

Good job Vincent!

Let me just say that I've had the privilege of taking a ride in this Monster "Sleeper" Prelude while tailing a Lotus Elise at Streets of Willow

It was awesome!

Good job Vince. BTW, wasn't Mike Kojima the guy who wrote the article series "Suck, Squish, Bang, Blow" in SCC a few years ago? It was a pretty complete essay on building performance/race engines.

It's probably him. I didn't subscribe to SCC, so I don't really know. But I know that Mike Kojima is very well-known in the Nissan community.

Apparently, he's been on the race scene since back in the 80's. Either you've got your Lude really hooked up well, or the guy is overrated.

You guys are making me . I still have lots of work to do, both the car and the driver. I compare my lap time with the fast guys in Honda Challenge H1. They are about 12 seconds quicker than me in Buttonwillow config. #13.

BTW, Kojima's car is a SER Cup car. I'm not sure what they are allowed as far as mods go, but from the recent race results, the SER Cup cars have been slower than the Honda Challenge H4 cars. So technically, my car has a little bit of an advantage over his car.

Nice job Vince. I'd rather have that sleeper than advertise and not be able to back it up.

Yeah, nice to meet you too. How did the day go for you yesterday? I didn't get to talk to you after my session. Unfortunately, I blew the motor during the first red group after the lunch break. It happened as I was going thru the esses in my 4th lap. I accidentally put the car in 2nd gear where I should be in 4th gear. Ouch!!! Later in the day after the motor cooled, my friend and I took the valve cover off and found that an exhaust valve was probably dropped into #3 cylinder.

Hope I have the $$$ to fix it before the December time attack.

BTW, here is my best lap (2 laps before I blew the motor) from yesterday, 2:07.463. At least I achieved my goal to break the 2:10 mark.

Congrats, VW. Now that the lude is temporarily out of commission, will the TSX see willow in the near future?

Well, the TSX will probably be at Streets of Willow in the July event, http://www.redlinetrackevents.com/event_July22_23.htm. But I don't expect to drive on the track too much. For sure, I'll be doing the "lead and follow" during the 1st beginner session.

This isn't the 1st time for the TSX, right? If not, do you usually run the stockers instead of the 19" volks? July 22nd will most likely be 90+ degrees! I wonder if folks start using the A/C.

I hope you videotape this one.

Hey Vince. Do they accept noobs. I'd love to take my TSX to a track so I can go fast in a safe way. I won't be laughed at if I show up with an AT and stock tires will I?

I'm gonna run in style, man. I'm gonna go with the 19" Volks since I won't be trying to beat anyone's time.

I've been to an event at Streets of Willow where the outside temp was 104 degrees. It was definitely hot, but I still drove with no A/C. Just make sure you keep yourself hydrated.

Of course they will accept noobs. Don't worry about the AT and stock tires. I remember that I had a student who came in a rental Jaguar X-Type. It was AT and stock tires. So if you're really interested, make sure you sign up using that link above. Hope to see you there.

It's hard to tell in the video, but you have a 5AT? I couldn't tell if you were sport shifting or regular shifting. Either way, I'm sure you're skills would tear us up on the track.

I messed up at the angle. I wanted to show the hand movements too, but I aimed the camera too high. Anyway, I have a 6MT.

Yes, you need a helmet, and make sure your car is mechanically good, no leaking fluid, working seat belts, good brakes, battery is tied down, etc.

Loving this picture, reminds me of my ITR!!! I like the simple clean look of the Lude. Simple and purposeful! I am taking my ITR to summit point raceway in West VA this July!

Just read your response in my other thread, but decided to talk about the redline event over here. This way I keep that thread for answering any questions about the RSX-S gears.

Do you recommend using a racing oil like Redline or Motul for the track? Or will Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec be good enough? I've heard some track junkies swear that Redline or some other brand makes a big difference.

I've never tried Redline or Motul oil, so I can't tell you if they actually make any difference. I've used Mobil 1 since the first oil change. IMO, if you keep an eye on the oil level after each run session (add more if needed), that's good enough. I don't know if I want to pay something like $7 per quart for the Redline oil.
