Shouldnt your insurance cover it? A rock hit my windshield on my last car on the highway and my insurance covered it. They came to my work and replaced the whole thing.

Take it to your local Novus glass repair shop to get their opinion. By the look of your picture, they should be able to fill in the crack because it hasn't spread and the crack is less than a 1 bill size.

If they do need to replace the windshield, your comprehensive insurance should cover the loss. Hopefully your deductable is low. I had to replace my windshield a couple of days ago because of a rock chip and it would have costed $530. With my insurance, it only costed $200 due to my deductable being $200.

Don't most insurances offer glass repair without needing to pay for a deductable. Check your last statement's declaration page and look to see what it says for glass repair. I have Metlife and it comes standard with collision and comprehensive.

in canada you can get a cracky repaired as long as the damage is less then 6 inches. Anything more then you have to get a new windshield.

Geico offers free glass repair.. I wouldn't be surprised if most of them do, too. They almost have to, it's in their best interest to have them fixed before the cracks spread beyond repair.

If they can fill in the crack, the repair should be free. As other people indicated, most insurance companies will cover the cost since it is cheaper than replacing the entire windshield. As I mentioned from the look of your picture, they should be able to fill in the crack w/o having to replace the entire windshield.

I've found (at least in California) that the reputable shops are unwilling to fix any crack that's bigger than a quarter, if it is in front of the driver. They're willing to go bigger than that if it's on the passenger side.

Whatever you do, don't go to the dealer. I had to replace the windshield on my old Audi. Dealer quoted over $700 installed. Independent glass shop did it for a little under $3, using "factory equivalent" glass. [This basically means that subcontractors who make the glass for Audi also sell the identical part without the "four rings" logo on it, for less than half the price.] There are only 3-4 major auto glass makers in the world.

I was actually refered to the guy who did mine by a (very cool) Audi service guy. Told me I was wasting my money bringing it to him and refered me to an independent.

Oops, what's with my typing?

Where I said above I replaced a windshield on my Audi for about $3, I obviously meant $300.

You'd be amazed at the types of cracks that can be repaired. At all costs, avoid replacing the windshield, since nothing is good as the factory seal.

Your insurance will cover windshield repair with no deductible (READ: NO COST TO YOU). They know that it's cheaper to pop the $50 to repair the windshield now rather than replace the whole thing later. They encourage you to get your windshield chips and cracks repaired.

Windshield glass is a sandwich.. basically 2 layers of glass with a plastic sheet in the middle. This is so when a rock hits the windshield, the windshield just makes a running crack or big chip rather than shattering in your face. To repair the windshield, the repairman will drill out the "outside" layer of the glass sandwich, stopping at the plastic sheet in the center. He will fill it in with epoxy which has the same reflective properties as glass. A suction device ensures the epoxy gets everywhere. After that all you'll see is a tiny dip where he injected the epoxy, or possibly nothing at all. This repair will hold forever so don't worry about it.
