Question What do this clip and spring under center console do?

I've pulled my center console off. I found a plastic clip and spring sitting in there:

It seems to be a part of the mechanism to open and close the cupholder door. Here it is, toward the upper left corner of the padding, back in the day when it was functional:

The cupholder door still seems to open and close fine. Does anyone know what purpose it serves? And how the spring situates in there?

Thanks in advance.

OMG, You can't operate the passanger ejector seat without those parts installed.

Then I'll have to remember not to give you a ride until I get it fixed.

Yeah I tried a search, couldn't find anything, not necessarily because there wasn't something out there, but because I probably didn't hit the right terms. I'll give it a better look. Thanks.

It looks like it came off the top cubby pocket. Don't know if you removed yours for some reason or not and if yours still works, but that looks like the exact mechanism.

Humph. Mine popped off too while installing the short shifter today.

I think I reinstalled it correctly. It popped out when I pulled the cupholders/console up and out.

Does anyone happen to have a closeup picture of it installed? (assuming it never popped off...) I want to make sure I put the spring back correctly.

Thanks

Is it really? It looks like to goes on the bottom front driver's side of the cup holders. Scheisterhoffer has a picture in the first post.

But the funny thing is, the spring makes it loaded so that it never touches the open/close mechanism. Almost seems useless as it doesn't really touch anything.
