Weird sound when engaging clutch.

I've been getting a really weird sound coming from the clutch (not the pedal but the actual transmission). It happens about 50% of the time when starting from a dead stop in 1st gear. Very seldom, it happens in 2nd when acclerating -- immediately as I am letting the clutch pedal up.
My best description of the sound is someone saying "hoo" in a high pitched voice. Like an owl with some helium inhalation!

What could this be?

2004 6MT, original clutch, 180,000km (about 112,000 miles).

Clutch release (throw-out) bearing, perhaps?

I don't know... I'm asking the masses.

That was a guess I had but its unsubstantiated and based on nothing more than a guess, since clutches aren't exactly a specialty of mine.

Both my CD7 and CB7 had this same issue, only AFTER replacing the clutch, flywheel, and release bearing (in each vehicle). I figured out that it was because I didn't properly lube the mainshaft splines with the Honda Super Hi-Temp Urea grease. What happens is when the clutch is just about engaged (or equally just released), you get some vibration as the clutch doesn't properly disengage or engage as it doesn't move freely on the mainshaft. Now I'm not 100% that's your problem but it sounds all too familiar. I DO know that many TSX owners experience other symptoms related to lack of grease on the mainshaft splines, such as brief grinding putting the car in 1st or R, and nonsmooth clutch engagement.

How difficult is it to grease the mainshaft splines? Does it basically involve replacing the clutch anyhow, labour-wise?

It can only be done by pulling it all apart as if you were doing a clutch job :-(
