Wax in paint chips

So finally after reading a number of the posting here on this subject I got around to “fix” the gazillion paint chips that I have accumulated in just 18K miles on the front end of my ‘04 CG TSX…. This paint sucks!!! I know, I should have bought the clear bra.

I had the regular brush-on type touch-up paint from Acura. I figured that I could use an old fountain pen to dip in the paint and apply to the car, thus making my own “paint-pen” which I hear works much better than the brush.

I quickly realized that about 90% of the paint chips were really superficial (did not go down to the primer/e-coat), but stood out as a sore thumbs because they were all filled with white wax residue, which is really noticeable against the CG paint.

Using the fountain pen without any paint, I just carefully removed the wax accumulation from the chips. Doing so made most of the chips virtually invisible. The fountain pen worked quite well because it has a nice round tip which did not make the chip bigger or deeper.

After spending an hour and “fixing” only half of the front end, now I’m left with the dilemma of what I’m going to do next time I have to wax the car. I have been using Mequiar’s Hi-Tech Carnauba wax (#26). Has anyone used that “Color Magic” wax that comes in different colors? I guess I’m looking for a wax that leaves a black or dark residue so that the paint chips will not come back to life after waxing. Any advice will be appreciated!!!

You could try Meg's NXT Gen Tech Wax. I use it with pretty good success, though others have complained about durabilty. It also makes the darker paints "glossy".

It goes on and comes of relatively clear.

Ask some of the detailers (Excel, GTA in Detail, Hawyen) in the Wash and Wax forum. they may know better what to tell you.

Don't use colored waxes. Ever.

Waxes should be crystal clear once dried... not colored to mask the existing, beautiful paint.

You can try Turtle Wax "ICE" which is supposed to leave zero residue. I prefer Meg's NXT Tech Wax paste...

Next time, before applying touch-up paint, use a prep-wipe that removes wax, grease, grime, oil, etc... This will permit the paints to stick MUCH better. If you just apply the paint over wax, it will come off, probably sooner than later. Sorry bud.

I saw an article about this product that might have helped you out; I have not yet tried it but it seems interesting! If anyone else has used it I would appreciate some feedback.

i dont' think u covered ur chips correctly. did u wash down the chip area with alcohol solution? You might have applied the chips on top of any sealent u have already.

In regards to "Don't use colored waxes. Ever" Thats not true, you'll see that Poorboy's Natty Blue wax comes out beautifully on dark colored cars as the wax complements the paint. They also have yellow waxes which glorify extreme yellow cars.

Don't use Turtle Wax "ice" or turtle wax anything, they're usually a waste of time.

Thanks for the advice. I did not use any paint, just removed the wax from the tiny chips. I would say that 90% of the chips are so small that they are not practical to fill-in with paint. With no wax in them you can not see them.

I have never had a high regard for Turtle wax either. I was surprised to see that Consumer Reports reported it to be better than some of the more recognized brands (Zymol, Meguiar’s, P21S, etc…)
