Unhappy water maybe in the gas tank?

hi,

I was wonder if I got water in my gas tank. I was washing my car and I also washed in compartment where you fill up the gas. I left the gas tank cap on and made sure it was tight. I washed the whole place with soap and water then rinsed if off.

I later noticed that theres a rubber neck/ring around the gas tank cap and theres a little hole to drain liquids. I'm worried that I might this hole might lead to the gas tank and I might have poured water and soap into it. Can any one let me know what the damage is? Thanks.

Nah, the hole in the black plastic part doesn't lead to the gas tank. It leads to a drain gap somewhere inside the wheel arch. I know because I'd had gas spill on that section and as it drained down the hole, a small puddle appeared under the car.

aaronng,

Thanks for the reply. I feel so much better. I was thinking what the worst case situation would be for my engine to run gas, soap and water.

If water gets in the engine it's bad news, it will hydrolock which means dead engine you'll have to get it replaced.

Except he was concerned with getting water in the fuel tank. Water in the fuel tank will not cause a hydrolock issue. And agree that the small hole under the fill pipe is to drain spillage out through the fenderwell and not down the painted surface of the fender.

Water in the tank won't cause hydrolock, but it will still cause pretty nasty damage to your engine because there isn't enough gas to combust with the air, giving you a lean condition.

Which is why some Sunoco 94 with (ethanol? methanol?) alcohol, or gas line antifreeze, is a good idea, from time to time, to safely get rid of accumulated water in the tank, which gets there from the air in the tank during a refill; the water combines with the stuff, and is burned in the engine and then gone.

Surely nobody's worried about frozen fuel lines this winter, but water in the tank is, of course, the reason it happens.
