Another wrecked TSX :-(
Another wrecked TSX :-(
i've seen the sad posts of a few TSXers with dented rides, and my heart goes out to you. Especially the folks with almost new TSXs. And now I join you. Actually it was almost three weeks ago that a woman was making a left turn through an intersection (entering from the opposite direction as I) and hit my beautiful four-month-old '06 CGP TSX right at the forward edge of my left front tire.
She was driving a '98 Mazda Protege, though you wouldn't have known it by looking at the front of her car after she hit me. It was completely unrecognizable. My TSX didn't look all that bad at the time, but as you can see from the pics, the wheel is about to fall off. Which I don't know if is a good thing or bad thing. Body work looks kinda minimal (didn't even dent the hood!), with a suspension replacement (and wheel and tire of course) the bulk of the repairs.
To add to the misery, her insurance company (Farmer's) has so far been quite unpleasant to deal with. I'm accustomed to dealing with State Farm, with whom I've never had any problems regarding a claim (and I've had two cars stolen!). Anyway, I have to get angry before Farmer's will even return my call. Took about ten days to get a police report here in Denver. And now the other driver is making it out to be my fault. Which it isn't. She got a ticket, I didn't.
So I'm waiting for Farmer's to accept liability. While since before Thanksgiving my TSX sits outside in the snow and sun and dirt and cold while I'm stuck in a yucky rental, AND didn't get to enjoy my sweet ride on a 1,500 mile holiday trip. Yes, I'm bummed.
The gory details:

On a lighter note, how 'bout my license plate?

Thanks all, for the sympathy. And the funny pic and remarks, OPKS and PJS. Humor is always appreciated.
And yeah, I forgot to mention that nobody was hurt in the accident. Always good news. A car can be fixed or replaced.
As for it being totaled -- I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. I figure there'd have to be something like $20K in damages.
And yeah, I'm about ready to claim it on my insurance and let 'em fight it out. There've been plenty of other distractions with the holidays and other things going on in my family, but I'm ready to get serious.

Generally write offs are half the valued price.
So, if they reckoned your car was worth $25K, there'd need to be less than $12.5K before they'd authorise repairs.
Otherwise, it's cheaper/better to write it off, but as with any insurance write off, refuse their first offer.
Alternatively, get them to source you the replacement for the figure they've offered - same spec, year, mileage, etc.

Snapped driveshaft, stuffed up hub and CV joints, broken left front suspension, high lightlyhood of a cracked gearbox case (and messed gearbox internals due to the force applied through the driveshaft).
It's going to be a mega repair bill if they choose to fix it.

It's not gonna be cheap -- I think we all know that. But when I said "I figure there'd have to be something like $20K in damages" I mean I think it'd have to be that much before they'd total it. For some reason a 75% of value number comes to my mind.
Actual cost to repair? I'm guessing $8K or so. It runs fine. I attempted to drive it after the police reports were all filled out. At the time the wheel didn't appear to be about to fall off. It went into gear -- or the gear selector (5AT) moved fine at least -- but the car wouldn't budge.

I feel your pain man!!!! Good luck, and def make your insurance company go after them ESPECCIALLY if you have a police report saying that it is her fault!!
My wife's jeep was in an accident in September and both us and our insurance company were sure they would total the car as someone rear ended her on the freeway at about 60mph. The damage to the rear of the car didn't look that bad but the total bill for fixing it was over $7000.
There was no frame damage, but the back gate had to be replaced. In the end they didn't total the car and was stuck in the shop for over 6 weeks. You are lucky you got the police report back that quickly. Here in the OC it seems as though nothing happens quickly. It took almost 8 weeks to finally recieve the police report so our insurance could find out the other persons insurance company. We were stuck with a rental for 6 weeks and only 4 of those weeks were paid for by the insurance. We finally got reimbursed by the other insurance company for our out of pocket expenses.
I would be very surprised looking at the damage to your front end if that is less than $12-15K in damages. I really feel your pain, as the accident my wife was in is still fresh in my mind, and even though I wasn't there in person I know the hassle and inconvenience of having to wait, deal with the insurance companies, and drive around a crap rental whilst people slowly make up their minds and take forever to fix it. Plus it never quite feels the same when you get it back.
I know if this happened to me in my TSX I would be heart broken. Sorry to hear the bad news and I hope it all gets taken care of, and you have a good Christmas.

Thanks again for all the sympathy and well-wishes, everybody. And right back atcha to the ones in the same or similar boat as I.
The good news is that I got a call from Farmer's (the other driver's insurance company) this morning and they're taking 100% responsibility for repairs. I should see a preliminary estimate tomorrow.
Now begins the joy of getting it fixed. And let's just hope it comes back with its wonderful attributes of precision and balance intact. If not, I'm gonna be cranky.
In the meantime, I think I'll trade in my Dodge Caliber rental for something a little nicer. Farmer's says they'll pay for "something comparable" to my car. Trouble is, I don't think there's anything on Enterprise's lot that's comparable to the TSX. The Caliber is not a horrible care, except for that blasted CV transmission. I don't know who thought that was a good idea.

The best enterprise was able to give us the day after the accident, even though we made a reservation for a car was a huge ass Chevy Silverado V8 double cab truck. That thing was such a piece of Sh*t and guzzled gas so quickly. Finally we managed to trade it back in for a Dodge Stratus which was not much better. It makes you realize how great the TSX is when you get in all these other crap rental cars!!
I traded the Caliber today for a Pontiac G6. Definite step up, and seems to be a decent enough car so far. I wouldn't trade my TSX for it though.
And I got the preliminary estimate for repairs on my TSX -- $9374.94. Of course that'll go up once they get in there.

I got a Pontiac Grand Prix as my rental and it still isn't comparable to my TSX either AND my damages are at $10,657 as of now, but yours looked worse than mine! I hope all goes well with your repairs, did they give you a date for when you would get it back yet? Mine is due to be given back to me on the 3rd!
I actually haven't even inquired as to the timing. The body shop has already commented that it seems to take a long time for Farmer's to call them back -- unfortunately echoing my experience. But I expect Farmer's to approve the estimate in a day or two, then the shop can get started on repairs.
After the blizzard is over at least. We've got a couple feet of snow on the ground (with drifts of 3-4 feet), and Denver has been pretty much been shut down since yesterday afternoon. With the holiday, it'll be next Wednesday before things get back to normal.
Hmmm... maybe I should've rented a snowmobile.
Good luck. I know you won't want to hear this, but my old car was totaled eight months ago when it was rear-ended. The fellow's insurance company is Farmers, and yep, they won't accept liability without going to arbitration. On a rear-end collision on the parkway. I guess it is cheaper to pay lawyers than claims, but I wouldn't have thought so otherwise.
Thanks, mjtsx. Farmers did accept liability, so at least that's taken care of. And the body shop has ordered parts. But with the holidays and now two major blizzards in Denver, the whole city is kinda behind schedule. But I'm keeping a zen-like attitude. I'm anxious to have my car back, but there are numerous more important things in life.
With 10k in damages, has anyone ever tried refusing to own a car after a collision? I'm with the mindset that if the Farmers driver caused the damage, they just purchased a slightly damaged TSX and I will go get a new one.
Sadly, it doesn't work that way.
The point of a repair is to put the car back to "as before" condition.
Not sure about you guys, but the UK has 5 categories of damage - Cat. A-D & F.
Category A - A vehicle which should have been totally crushed, including all its spare parts.
Category B - A vehicle from which spare parts may be salvaged, but the bodyshell should have been crushed and the car should never return to the road.
Category C - An extensively damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.*
Category D - A damaged vehicle which the insurer has decided not to repair, but which could be repaired and returned to the road.
Category F - A vehicle damaged by fire, which the insurer has decided not to repair.
* - requires the vehicle to be re-registered. More severe damage than Cat. D.

Alas, it's not as simple as refusing the repairs and demanding a new car. If after it's repaired, I'm unhappy with it, there are actions I could take. I don't expect that to be the case -- there's no reason the car won't be as good as it was. Anyway, I'd have to think long and hard before I chose to fight. As far as I'm concerned, life is too short to be spent in litigation over a car.
