VSA Problem...

Late last week, temperature up here was -30 C and my '04 TSX (52,000 kms) was parked outside overnight. Backed out of the laneway and the VSA dash light and ! come on. Dropped off at dealer this morning. Dealer tells me it is the lateral yaw angle sensor that is the problem and they will make me a deal at $962 and include the tax, God Bless them. Car is still within the 60,000 km warranty but unfortunately falls outside the three year warranty as delivery was October 2003. Told him I may have to drive the car through the dealer window and blame faulty VSA !

Comment or advice?

Had this happen to me at about 40,000 km's on my first 04.(AT) Luckily for me it was covered under warranty.

I'd suggest a call to Acura to commence bitching and complaining. Hopefully they at least meet you half way. Good luck.

Appears Canadian warranty is 3 year / 60,000km.

05 or earlier Acura's sold in Canada only came with 60K (km's) or 3 years.

06+ have 80K or 4 years.

oh, thats unfortunate.

Yes, certainly call them - hopefully they will want your repeat business and may appease you to retain it.

Good luck man!

I've had numerous "goodwill" warranty things fixed at my dealer. They always offered "You pay the labour, we'll pay the part". For my seat base, that was $100 or so in labour vs. $500 in part cost.

Try it, and if they don't do anything, call Acura Customer Service and explain that this is a very expensive part to have just fail for no reason.

Another option is a junkyard, but I'd imagine they know the price of these parts and not offer a significant discount.

If you have the Helm's manual - check how much work is involved in replacing the part yourself, if you were to buy it alone.

Same dealer as I have always gone to (not by choice, but by geographical proximity).

You can always try going across the river to Casino Acura in Gatineau and see if they do it... although be aware that they're owned by the same ppl. as Camco. Might not hurt to try though!

Just spoke with Acura C/S and they told me once warranty period is expired it is up to the dealership service dept. if they can spin some sort of deal. Cost of actual yaw / lateral acceleration sensor $757.01. We shall see what happens and I will keep ya posted. Thanks for the help, awesome group of owners.

Remember, that's YOUR cost. I'd bet the dealer cost is about 75% of that at most. So get them to buy the part, you pay the labour? Or, live w/o the VSA, or find a used yaw sensor from a damaged/scrapped TSX. www.car-part.com will show which places have a TSX and then call them to inquire about getting you that sensor. I can't imagine it costing too much to ship as its likely not a big part.

Update...

Dealer is willing to go with 20 % discount off part and labor $ 790 + tax as a goodwill gesture. Acura customer service stated they would call me back by Tuesday March 20.

Just received a call from Acura C/S. They will match dealership reduction of part cost by 20 %. Final tally 40 % reduction in VSA parts and 20 % reduction in labor cost. Quite pleased in the end and still love the car!

My 2004, Canadian TSX, was 3/60000 for bumper-to-bumper, and 5/100000 for powertrain.

And what Acura has a 40K warranty? The US warranty is 50K or 4 years and 70k or 6 years on the powertrain.

Ohh boy

Okay, now that we have 40 % discount on the VSA part and 20% off the 1 hr. labour to install the assembly, I am now told that the original 2.5 hr diagnostic charge @ $85.00/hr. that must still be paid (?? for reading diagnostic codes ??) Must be using an old Hyperion computer they are using, WOW!

So what's the overall cost then? can't be TOO bad since the part is coming near or below cost. And $85 + (0.8 * $80ish) = approx $150 in labour and diagnostic charges. I'd say go for it, if you're comfortable paying for the part @ a 40% discount. VSA is a huge piece of the safety system in these cars... might as well keep it working.

Also inquire about the warranty on this and other VSA-related parts that they may be touching in order to replace this one. You should settle for no less than 1yr/20,000km on the replacement and related parts. That is typically Acura's standard, but get it in writing!
