Question Possible Dent Defect??

Over the weekend, I thought I noticed a "dent" on the driver's side front quarter panel right in the crease. However, I don't think its an actual "dent". I only noticed it when looking at it a 45 degree angle. I thought it was odd because its in a location where it would be impossible for someone to dent it by opening a car door into it. Also, I make it a point to park away from everything. When I ran my hand over the area where it appeared that there was a "dent", it felt completely normal and I didn't feel any dent. Also, when I looked at it up close (i.e. not on an angle) I couldn't see any "dent". I'm wondering if its some kind of factory defect because the "dent" is only noticeable when you look at the driver's front quarterpanel on about a 45 degree angle. I wonder if its just the way the light hits the crease?? I showed someone else and he agreed with me that it doesn't appear to be a dent but just the reflection of light because you can't see a "dent" when you look at it up close. Has anyone else noticed this?? It's only visible when you look at it on a 45 degree angle. By the way, I could only notice this on the driver's side front quarter panel and didn't see anything similar on the passenger side front quarter panel.

Dan - unfortunately I don't have a digital camera. Anyway, I'm not so sure it would even show up in a picture. I'll try to explain how I noticed it and maybe that will help. If you stand by your driver's front door and look at the crease that runs along the quarter panel at almost at a 45 degree angle (look in the area above the tire) you may see what looks like a "dent", but if you go up and look at up close (i.e. straight on and not at an angle, you won't see it). Also, if you run your hand over it, it feels completely normal (i.e. no indentation or anything else to indicate a "dent"). I showed someone else and he noticed what I was talking about but he didn't think it was a "dent" but rather just the way the light reflects on it. I think he may be right - but its hard to tell. Heck, I've had my car for 3 months now and I just noticed it - but I'm very picky and I notice the slightest imperfection.

Is it like that on the passenger side?

Yes, I saw that, too. But I can also see it on the passenger side. It is only noticable when standing next to the front door, and then looking forward following the line down to the fender. It's a flat dent, a little bigger than a quarter.

Tobiash - good description of how to locate the "dent" and the size of the "dent". I didn't notice it on the passenger side, just the driver's side, but maybe I wasn't looking at it in the right light. What is your take?? Is it a "dent" or just the way the light hits it?? Since several of us have this, its either the light or a factory defect. I didn't think it was caused by something bumping into my front quarter panel because of the location of the "dent".

Anyone else notice it?? What's your take: factory defect dent or reflection of the light???

I think it's a factory defect. I am curious if anyone else has it on both sides, too.

I'm curious to see if all TSX's have it or just some TSXs. I got my TSX in December 2003 and it was manufactured on November 5, 2003. I could only notice it on my driver's side, but I'll re-check the passenger side as well.

I'm surprised more people haven't responded to this posting, since, in my humble opinion, a perceived dent that may be a factory defect and which can theoretically be seen is more serious than a window rattle defect which can only be heard if you hit a big enough bump, have the radio off, and the windows rolled up. Just my humble opinion, though. I'm due for an oil change in the next few weeks so I'll ask the dealer about it when I bring it in for an oil change.

It's hard to see unless you look at it at the right angle. Like Tobiash said - you pretty much have to stand right next to the driver's side front door and look down the crease line toward the front of the car and you'll see it. It's a flat dent about the size of a nickel (Tobiash said a quarter, but I think its slightly smaller than a quarter). Once you see it you'll think its strange because if you run your hand over the front quarter panel you can't feel a "dent" and if you look at it straight on or up close you can't even see the apparent "dent". Maybe I'm just being too neurotic about this. I'm the type of person who is very picky and notices even the most minor things (but for some reason the window rattle doesn't bother me even though sometimes I notice it).

Dan.............I've read several if not all of your posts on this site. I find you a good source of insider info on the TSX but what exactly is your position at Acura and how do you feel about all of these glitches that the car seems to have.
I'm currently the owner of an 02 RSX-S who's thinking of getting a TSX if not soon then maybe in 05. Thanks.

I come up with the slogans for Acura.

Actually I work for a production volume CNC machine shop.

Anyone else notice a "dent"???

So other than Tobiash - has anyone else noticed the appearance of a "dent" as I've described?? I can't believe people are more worried about a rattle that you can only hear when the radio is off or very low, the windows are rolled up, and you hit a big enough bump in the road. Tobiash - I looked this morning and couldn't see a similiar "dent" on the passenger side, only on the driver's side.

Re: Possible Dent Defect??

I have the same dent (driver's door, very high up). I noticed it after I washed the car yesterday. It's completely smooth, not a scratch in the area, but at an angle it looks like a big 1/2" dent. Very odd.

I'll take a picture later today and post it at Club TSX with a link here.

weird that some people have it and some don't. Also weird that it is only noticeable when you look at it on an angle and when you run your hand over the area, it feels completely normal. I'm due for an oil change soon, so I'll ask the dealer about it and I'll check out other TSXs on the lot to see if others have it.

I am extremely picky as well. My car is brand new (purchased mid feb.) I noticed something like that on my car door after I picked it up from the dealer ( I had an oil leak) and I assumed that the technicians were not careful with my car. It does look like it's been hit by another car door though. It probably isn't the same thing you are describing because mine seems to be longer. I did not see anything like that before my trip to the dealer.

I think that the TSX is very susceptible to side dents because there are no side door protection bars.

I just checked my car and I don't see the dent. I wish someone had a pic up so I could compare exactly with what people are seeing.

I looked again today when the car was in my shop under some bright lights and I stared at it for a good 5 minutes without seeing anything. It felt like when those stereogram pictures were popular in the 90's and everyone was standing around at the mall staring at the pictures to see what everyone was talking about.

I don't think there's anything wrong with my car but if someone can take a picture or at least outline the area where the "dent" should be I'll take another look.

I doubt it will show up in a picture because I don't think its an actual "dent", more just the way the light reflects off the area in question that gives the appearance of a "dent". However, I'll try to get my hands on a digital camera over the weekend and post a picture of the area where the perceived "dent" is.
