when my car switches gears between 1st and 2nd(in a 5AT in automatic) it isnt smooth and seems to have trouble switching gear. it almost sputters and i dont know what it is. anyone else had this problem? if so, what was it?

 

When did you last change your auto transmission fluid?

 

1 to 2 on these cars are not that smooth. wish they made their trannies like the ones in the late 80's and 90's, those were smooth.

 

I think the main difference in the trannies of yore and those of today is the torque converters are a lot more efficient. Because they are more effective at transferring power from the engine to the wheels, there is less slush in the box. This is a good thing for fuel efficiency, horsepower and engine responsiveness. The downside is that you feel more through the transmission.

I know Mercedes has a system in some of their cars that have the adjustable ride quality where when set to luxury, it moves the impellers further apart so as to smoothen out any harshness from the changing torque loads on the transmission. It makes a big difference in the responsiveness of the drive train though.
