Metal on metal sound

So this morning I am driving up to the bank to make a deposit and I hear this loud squealing and screetching sound - metal on metal -. I was looking around to see if they were working on the building because of how loud it was. I come to a stop at the window and it's quiet.

So I am on my way and there it is again. Now it is much louder and can be heard with the windows up. It sounds like its coming from the back and the front at the same time. It happens going foward and backwards, and whether I am pressing the brakes or not. The emergency brake is off. So I decided to go no further and pulled over. I got out and looked to see if there was a stone lodged in one of the brake discs. I haven't paid much attention to the brakes before, on all 4 wheels it looks like the pads are touching the disc. The car moves without any noticable hesitation.

So I called my dealer who sent out a tow truck. They said they would have a loaner put on the truck and they would be there in 30 mins. All went to plan and now they have my car. What the heck happend?

btw '07 with 15,000 miles. it was just in for service about 20 days ago. I had them rotate, balance, and align the tires.

I got a piece of mulch stuck between my rotor and and the thin metal splash guard behind the rotor. The splash guard amplified the sound tremendously and my god did it sound terrible. I thought I had perhaps cracked a brake pad (a possibility in your case) and found the mulch piece when I was inspecting the pads.

Yeah, I have a feeling it is a stone. They are doing a lot of road work around this area and there is debris everywhere. I couldn't pinpoint the wheel because it sounded like it was coming from more than one. I had someone listen to each wheel while I went back and forth and they couldn't figure which one it was.

I had the same problem a few months back. I freaked out. I searched everywhere I could think of that may be the source of the sound and I didn't find a thing. As soon as I was going to take my car to the dealer, the sound went away and has not come back since.

It was like screeching nails on a chalk board and was independent of any conditions other than the car rolling. It was always the same loudness and pitch. It was very bizzare!

Jack you car up and turn the wheels by hand. That should help pin point which one it's coming from. Hopefully.

Ok, so I got a call yesterday from the dealer and they can't hear the noise anymore. The tow guy told them he def. heard something when he drove it on the roll back. They checked the braking system and they found a small amount of debris in one of the front brakes, but nothing that would cause my problem. They believe the 40 minute ride to the dealer must have broken the stone loose. Oh, well.

Sometimes driving in reverse will remove the debris.
