Tough to get into 1st if going below 10mph, just me?

I have a 6MT and when I'm slowing down (like coming up to a stop sign) I press in the clutch, take the shifter out of gear (all while breaking) and then I try to put it into 1st just before I come to a full stop (between 5-10 mph) so it's in gear for when I continue on.

But when I try to put it 1st it takes a lot of effort, like i have to put force into it, if I'm fully stopped it goes in with no effort. No other gear does this while moving and trying to select the gear, just first. Is this normal based on the condidtions described or is there something wrong with the 1st gear syncros? Thanks.

no... this is normal. it usually locks out of 1st gear if you're rolling at any speed greater than ~2-3mph. i usually simply shift into 2nd and regain speed that way.

Thanks, makes perfect sense. I was just hoping that I could use 1st freely in those situations so i didn't get the deep vibration of 2nd at ~1k rpms, think i need to change my technique...

I doubt it's locked out, but I think you'll find that almost any manual tranny will behave this way. If you're trying to get it in 1st from a roll, you'll need to rev-match at a bare minimum. Possibly even double-clutch. If you're coming to a stop, just wait until you're stopped to put it in 1st. Much easier on the synchros.

Oh I agree, but when I said "stop" I meant "rolling stop"..so thats what I mean by having to change my technique

1st gear has a lock out. The Evo does not.

I think it's just too tough for the synchros to get it into 1st from a roll. I don't think it's really a "lockout" per se. I can get my current car (not a TSX) into 1st from a 25 mph roll. Just needed to rev it up to about 4000 rpm first to match revs and then it went right in. Without synchros (or poor ones) I would have needed to double-clutch for sure.
