Tighten Gas Cap (06 TSX) message

Tighten Gas Cap (06 TSX) on info screen.

My wife just got gas on friday. (Oregon and NJ full service gas)
I assume the gas attendant didn't put the cap on right. She took it off and put it on correctly 5+ just to be safe.

Anyway she has driven about 30miles and the light is still on.

Any ideas on how to get rid of this or does it just need a few start/stop cycles?

thanks in advance!!

It takes awhile for the message to clear. Some say after 1/3 tank or 150miles; some say sooner. If you have a OBDII scan tool, you can clear the code. Or disconnect the battery, wait 30mins, reconnect it.

I have a tool but its specific for my 07 Silverado. (don't think i can clear codes with it.)

if I go the battery route will i have to reprogram all the memory seats etc.

Yes, also the radio and possibly the window auto features.

Might as well take it in - the emissions system is warranteed for 8/80,000. Let Mr. Honda fix it on his nickel.

How many miles do you have? Does the car drive differently? The tighten gas cap message could be related to the Check emissions system message. If the dealer is too far or too busy, you could try hitting up an Autozone or Kragen to get the fault code read for free (based on what other forum members have experienced).

I have an 06 as well and I had the same thing happen a while ago. Took it in to the dealership, and they replaced the gas cap under warranty. Hasn't happened again so far.

If you search around you'll find a few others (myself included) have had similar problems. The message came on the same day as the Maintenance Minder message did so I had the dealer look it while it was in. They did an evap test and it passed. But, having looked here beforehand, I had a look at the gas cap seal. When I got it back, I found that they had changed it. The new one was a different color and material. The dealer didn't say anything about it either. But I haven't had a problem with it since.
