I don't know how many people here will be able to technically help you with this, its largely uncharted territory. I'd get that car back to the install shop immidiatly for diagnosis!

The most common SC noise problem is the idle pulley due to small bearing and high speed. Over tightening the drive belt could also affect the nose cone bearing on the SC and/or the idle pulley. You can pin point the noise by using a stethoscope.

If the sound is loud enough to hear from inside the passenger cabin, wouldn't listening to it with a stethoscope cause some potentially serious ear damage? Are those stethoscopes somehow muffled or something?

The stethoscopes are usually designed to amplify the sound. So it can get pretty loud but it does the job to locate where the noise is coming from.
