Just checking in with those who have had the expansion valve replaced--looks like it's been six months for quite a few of you. Has the sound come back? It's probably too cool+low humidity still... I live in the lobby of Hell (in terms of heat+humidity), and though I've run the A/C a lot, it hasn't been humid enough for the A/C to make the "whooop" sound. But I'd love to hear from, in the coming months, those who had the expansion valve replaced: if they have had the sound come back or not. I'm also hoping it isn't indicative of a compressor failure.

I just thought of something. I replaced my serpentine belt auto-tensioner a few months back, because it was out of spec. It was very simple to do, and the part wasn't too expensive. I also replaced the belt. Since that belt drives the compressor in our TSXes, I wonder if the slightly out-of-spec tensioner would've contributed to the noise. Hmmm...

I can't believe I found this thread!!!!! Over at nobody knew what I was talking about!! The whooping been happening on my car since day 1 0miles. Am going to be making a appointment early next month when it gets a lot warmer here is SoCal. And a printing this whole thread to show the dealer because this would be my 3rd time talking the car to South Bay Acura for the A/C noise. Hopefully they don't give me BS and the change the Expansion Valve!! Am this close on trading in my car bc of this noise!!! Grrrr! Am just more relief now that I see a lot of ppl having the same problem!! Anyone who had there Valve replace has the noise showed up??

Had the noise on my '04. Traded the car prior to fixing. Had the noise on my '08, was fixed, hasn't returned.

Thank god I'm not going crazy nor my car is haunted. So if I get an expansion valve this should be covered by the waranty, correct? I have 60K on my '07 TSX. Does anyone know if the problem went away once the expansion valve was changed?

I had the same problem at 69k mi; read further in the site & some guy has a wav file of the sound. I had the A/C "evacuated & recharged", and that solved it right away! Cost about $200

Noise will come back if you evacuate and recharge the system, that's only a very short temporary solution. The problem is the Expansion Valve needs to be replaced.

I have an '06 TSX and got the whooping noise at 100k. They did the evac and recharge (I think) for $150 and the noise went away. Now it's back after 45k miles. It's not happening as often yet so I'm holding off getting it fixed again.

Simple Answer & What To Tell Your Mechanic

It is pretty common in the TSX's and very simple to cure! What happens is there is a very small amount of moisture in the a/c system and it forms ice crystals on the end of the expansion valve. When this happens it makes the system make a whoop type sound into the evaporator that can be pretty loud inside the car. To cure this, the system needs to be evacuated and pulled into a deep vacuum for at least an hour to be sure all the moisture is out and recharged. This can be very hard to reproduce so just have your mechanic perform the procedure I just said and the noise will stop.

I hope this helps solve the mystery "Whooping" sound

This is correct. I had this problem last summer and that is exactly what they did and it has yet to make the noise since.

I know this is an old thread, but I have had this problem for a few months and it seems to be increasing in frequency. If I wait to have this fixed (either the A/C evacuation/recharge or the replacement of the expansion valve or both) until the next oil change which is due in about 2-3 months/2,000 miles or so, am I going to be okay?

My daughter and I both have a 2006 TSX she has 103K miles on her car and started experiencing the whooping sound when the AC is on if this is not fixed will it cause future damage? So from what I'm understanding the system needs to be evacuated then recharged and also the expansion valve replaces to take care of the problem?

What an awesome thread. I just bought a brand new mdx 2012. yes 2012 and new. and I've had the car for 1 day and it made the sound since the first few minutes. I will take it in to have it checked out later. thanks guys. This is not just a TSX problem. My MDX has the same problem and it is just like the sound in the video posted by Roci.

This thread was right on time for me. I own a 2008 TSX with about 72,000 miles on it. I've been having this issue on and off for a couple of years now. I think I'll opt to have the system evacuated and recharged before I look into replacing the expansion valve.

So there seems to be two fixes, one is definitely permanent and one is potentially permanent. For the temporary fix, evac and recharge, it seems that some are saying that if the vacuum is held for a long time that it might be a permanent fix. Can anyone verify this? What would I have to tell my mechanic to get this done?

For the permanent fix with the expansion valve replacement, can I easily get this work done at my local auto shop since it's way too expensive at the dealership? Any idea how much it might cost?

ive had both of those things done and i still get the whoop sound every once and a while. Had my system completely flushed and i replaced a fan, the compressor and the expansion valve. Personally i wouldnt waste the money unless you absolutely have to. dealer cost was almost 2k, luckily my buddy is a mechanic.

Any update on those who've had the extended vacuum performed?
