Strange "whooop" sound...
Hi all,
I want to give you an update on the "whoop" sound issue. I went to the dealer two weeks and they had diagnosed the issue and seems fixed the whoop sound problem.. I haven't heard the sound ever since.
The technician performed "A/C Evacuate and Recharged A/C System" on my TSX. As far as I know, no parts was changed or replaced. They didn't mentioned changing expansion valve or anything parts at all.
The following is the exact word they used on my work order/ invoice :
""Whoop" sound coming from the dash area when A/C is turned on. Tech verified stated symptom. Called Techline. Said to performed A/C evacuate and recharge service. Performed A/C evaluate and recharged A/C system. No noise heard at this time."
I hope this information can help for those who had this similar problem.

Good update! I'd certainly be willing to have the dealer give the evacuate/recharge approach a try. It's far less invasive than replacing the expansion valve, and if it fixes the problem, it should be covered under warranty. Thanks!
I had the same problem with my 07 TSX. It took two trips and me recording the sound to get it fixed. The technician performed an A/C Evacuate and Recharged A/C System and it has not made the sound since then.

Same whooping sound...
I thought it had something to do with the AC too since it only seemed to happen when the AC was on but apparently it was an issue with the steering column (or so said my service rep).
In the shop being replaced under warranty, I'll update if the noise does not in fact go away after having had the steering column replaced.

Acura techline will suggest evacuating the freon and replace at proper level. Sorry to tell you but it is not a steering column issue. I guess the proper amount of freon was not added at the factory. Still have mine to be done. Just need to get the dealer to duplicate it.
Enough time has not elapsed yet for me to really be able to test this theory. (I work from home and don't necessarily drive every day.) However, so far, this is working.
Every time I park/turn the car off, before I turn the ignition off, I turn the A/C off. I wait about 1 second, then I turn the car/ignition off. When I get in the car to drive it, I turn the ignition on, wait a few seconds, then power on the A/C.
So far, I have not heard the whoooop noise but once, very faintly. I should mention that until I started doing this, the noise was getting louder and happening much more often. I figure if it's some sort of vacuum/pressure issue that turning the system off before I shut down the engine and turning it on after the engine is running might help. Maybe it's just a coincidence, but it's worth a shot. And hey--it's free to try.
I think turning off the compressor (A/C) eases the load on the engine during the ignition sequence, too, but I'm not 100% certain about that. Anyway, if anyone tries this, would you post your results--good or bad?

But I am trying to get into the habbit of turning it off before I turn off the car, I've already got the habit down of carefully releasing the seatbelt and carefully placing it back to the side of the seat, rather than just unclipping it and letting it go back on its own, and scuffing up the plastic. Too bad I didn't realize this till about a month after I had the car, and by then it was too late, the plastic was already scratched up
Ok, so I think I have the same problem, I took a video with the wooot sound, is this what you all have experienced?
http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z...rent=wooot.flv
You can hear it in the beginning of the video, and in the end of the video. For the people who got there's fixed, how much did you pay to fix it?

i had the same problem. brought it to the dealer and they fixed it after a couple of trys. it has to do with the ac compressor having moisture inside. have them drain out the old freon and recharge it. that should fix the problem. if not, ask them to call thomas acura in west covina, ca and ask about the problem.
OK-- this thread was easy to find...
I've been hearing the "whoop" too!! I figured, now that I've heard it a few times, and I've been able to notice a bit more when it happens (well, at least a *little* more info) that I'd come in here and see if I could find any mention-- though I had no idea what I'd search for-- I guess the "whoop" is just REALLY descriptive! :P
Oh, I've got an '07 that is just over a year old, not quite 4k (yes, just 4k... our longer trips keep getting delayed, and I work from home).
Anyway-- guess I know the fix is apparently the evac/replace. So am I right that this is considered warranty service? And would that mean I should be able to use the local Honda dealer? (they do work on Acuras). I've never had a new car, so never been able to get anything on warranty... Our dealer is almost 3 hours away though, so it'd be nice to not have to take it that far just for a random "whoop"!
And yet again a huge sigh of relief that I found out what it is so easily-- i love this site!!

Yep, that's the sound. Mine was fixed under warranty. I am not sure what they would charge otherwise.
I just heard it in my car for the very first time today while stopped at a light. First I thought it was my brakes not holding the car on a slight incline, but that wasn't it. I didn't know so many people have experienced the same issue.
This has been going on for the past couple of months for me on my '06. I finally had the time to look up this issue. Im sorta relieved we all share the same issue and have found the answer. My warranty has expired so let me find out how much they charge for this service. And it is 249.95. Luckily my bro is a tech at Honda. But thanks all for making this issue real easy to diagnose and solve.

I'd been putting off taking it back to the dealer to get looked at again but I finally broke down and scheduled an appointment. They were unable to reproduce the sound, again, but they did find a leak from one of the hoses in and/or around the AC system and replaced it. After replacing that hose they flushed and recharged the AC system and said that the leak could've been causing pressure issues which could've been responsible for the odd whooping sound (even though they never heard the sound themselves).
So I've had the car back for two weeks and no whoop yet! I'll post again if it comes back.

For those of you who had your systems evacuated and recharged, has the noise returned? I have it on my 08. The last time I took it into the dealer they were unable to reproduce it, so they didn't do anything about it. But I'm wondering if I tell them the problem and the solution, if they'll just do it under warranty. Doubtful, but if I point them at this forum along with the video posted above, maybe they'll reconsider. But I'd like to have some confirmation that its a solution, not a band aid. Thanks!
Looks like the 08's are having this problem too. Someone (probably AZine member) posted this on youtube.

Glad mine doesn't make farting noises.

I have an 06 and have had this fluid evac/replace deal done last fall due to this exact sound. I have recently started using my A/C again (did not use it due to winter weather), and the sound came back.
Did anyone get a different fix that proved effective? I am going to take mine in again when I get my service done, but I have a feeling they will do the same thing as before and it will not help (since it didn't the first time around).
My sound is *exactly* like the sound in the videos.

Mine had the same problem, but warranty was up. Called Acura TLC to see if they will fix on a goodwill since it was common(to us) problem, and they gave me a big fat NO. So I took it to an AC repair shop, had them evacuate and recharge for $40. It was a good deal, since I just tell them that manufactor suggest to just do a simple recharge and theres no need to check for any leakage or any other thing. Works like a champ and no Whoopy !!
The a/c evac and recharge was $66 + freon. For me, it came out to $33 for freon, so a total of $100.
I picked up my car from my autobody shop two weeks ago after I got rear ended and noticed that my A/C wasn't as cold as it used to be. I then experienced that infamous "whoop" sound about a week after. I've had my 04 TSX for a little over 4.5 years with 54k miles and have never had to set the A/C below 69 and above 3 on the fan speed (I live in Los Angeles). After yesterday's 100+ degree weather and my A/C blowing cool, not cold, air, I realized that my a/c was messed up - something that I was hoping to avoid as a lot of people in this forum have been experiencing with their 04 tsx's.
Luckily I was able to take it back to the autobody (Marco's in south pasadena, ca) where they inspected it themselves, found nothing wrong, and eventually took it into the dealer and had them inspect/fix it for me.
thankfully they took care of the bill and now my a/c is back to blowing cold air.
I normally only drive with the a/c on on the freeway because I baby my car and don't wanna stress the engine by driving city with the a/c on (although lately i've been slowly transitioning out of that phase). I'm just noticing now the sound the a/c compressor makes when it turns on and off and was wondering if it's prevalent in other people's cars as well. I never realized it was that noticeable, and don't know if it's just normal wear and tear or if it will ead to something bigger.
Thanks for the help!

hahaha wow! This is hilarious, I have a a sizzling noise in my 06, not the whooping sound... hmm I have 49,400 on my rig and I just spend a half hour at the dealership explaining the problem, then they test drove it, didnt find anything, and of course "it's all documented just incase something happens" which means nothing lol...
Question, is this associated with a sizziling noise? when the A/C comes on, it sizzles and you can hear the expansion chamber load up... I hope that it doesn't lead to that noise!!!! Thanks for the info guys

Whoop sound
Hi,
My honda jazz is giving the exact sound.."whoop" once a while. Congrat to those who is able to capture it on video. Haha. Went to my mechanic and he said is the "expansion valve". Went to honda service centre and luckily they heard the sound whooping from my A/C. They also confirm is the expansion valve problem.
I ask them if doing the A/C evacuate and recharge will solve the problem and they said that's temporarily solution and sound sure will come back.
Will go this weekend to fix it and will post you guys the update.

So I have stated having this same problem myself, has any of the folks that have had the expansion valve replaced had the problem come back? Has anyone that has just had the AC flushed and recharged had it come back? I will probably look into getting the AC flushed and fileld soon and think about getting the expansion valve replaced later.

@ the videos. I didn't know it sounded like that. It would freak me out.
