strange noise from pullys
First of all my serp belt started squealing after cold start and sometimes at idle. It usually stops over 1k rpm. What im more concerned about is I have noticed an intermittent noise coming from one of the pullys. It sounds like a scraping noise and is sometimes very loud. I was thinking it could be a bad bearing but im not sure. I hanvnt noticed anything performance wise to go along with it. I know this isnt a whole lot of info but any input would be appreciated.
To diagnose, you'll need to remove the serpentine belt and individually spin the idler bearings on tensioner and AC. Any roughness or rattling would indicate bearing or idler needs replacement.
I would also check AC drive plate (inner portion of clutch), water pump, alternator, and power steering for any significant resistance. Only the water pump should have minor resistance.
I recently found that serpentine belt on Toyota Matrix would frequently squeak on cold startup. After removing serpentine belt and checking bearings I found no detectable faults. The old serpentine belt looked OK but was old, so I replaced and this eliminated the cold start squeak. I concluded wear and stretch had reduced tension to too low level to pull one of the loads.
good luck
