rattle after comptech header install

Still trying to determine what causes this. It only happens when the engine is chugging at low rpms in idle and AC is turned on. One theory that I have is that the air flow through the exhaust has changed as a result of the headers breathing better causing a new resonance that was not their before. Which leads me to wonder if changing to an aftermarket exhaust would change this.

any thoughts?

Another member on the "OurCar" Club who installed the Comptech Header recently has the exact same problem. No solution yet.

I have the same issue,

1 replace all hangers for the exhaust to cat.
2 if its a loud rattle that sounds like metal then check your exhaust if its hitting the sway bar i had to ask the mechanic to fix the hangers and make sure the exhaust hangs away from the swaybar. He installed the headers and it was a bit short so it pulled the cat and exhaust closer to the headers.
3 try retighten all the bolts people said one or two might be lose somewhere.

See i get this very mild rattle when the ac is on. As soon as the compressor normally turns on i can sense the rattle. no one can hear it outside though so I dont know what else to do but maybe replace the hangers. Like it only rattles so faint when the ac is on.

same here! its not the exhaust hangers i dont think, i can shake my exhaust with my hands and it doesn't make any noise. its some sort of vibration caused by the headers. i just spoke to a tech at comptech and he said he never heard of the problem and is going to check with others there about it and get back to me.

I have the same issue as well and actually made a thread about it. I just learned to live with it. Although it is annoying. I believe another member of acurazine got rid of the comptech header because the rattling/vibration was too annoying.

so is there a reliable header out there that doesn't cause problems? since the comptech one rattles and the dc one cracks, what else is there?

Its not a header problem its our rubber hangers, i went to the mechanic and he told me its the cat hanger its torn up. So i need to figure out which hanger to replace nearest to the cat and header he mentioned.

It was torn up probably install wore it down.

I observed a slightly audible rattle during idle when I first installed it. The only time I could hear it was when I was parked in my garage and the sound reflected off my walls. I haven't noticed anything since then and its been 2 months now.

Its not the exhaust its the hanger nearest to the cat and headers... hey told me when they installed the headers it was probably torn a bit and has been wearing down ever since.

That is probably why we can hear it in the cabin and not anywhere else.

seems less likely if it happened on many different installations though

Is it louder inside the cabin or outside the cabin when it rattles?

that tells me its vibrating against something that is part of the frame or rigidly tied to the cabin.

when my wife based my cusco brace it was touching the cat and it produced an aweful rattle at a specific RPM that could be felt in the chasis and especially in the accelerator pedal

I had the exact same problem but it has softened in the last couple months. Can't hear it from outside like others wrote but can be rather annoying in the cab. And only when the AC compressor is activated, tranny is in drive, and you are at a stop. I believed it to be caused by the excess vibration going through the header to the cat because the header has no middle mounting point like the OEM one has. This vibration may cause a "resonating" rattle through either the heat guards above the pipes leading to the mufflers or in the heat shields surrounding the converter. I just learned to live with mine even though you could probably fix it if you really wanted too. There is alot of vibration though. Get a very trustworthy friend to hold the brake for you while in drive with the AC on and look underneath and you will see how much the header is moving.

Just a theory.. but is everyone who is having this issue have an auto tranny? I have the 6MT and don't have any problems. Just wondering if somehow there is less clearance with the auto that is causing the problem.

Nope, I have a 6MT and if the A/C compressor is engaged, sitting at idle, there is the metallic noise as well. I just assumed it was my quiet tips, but now I'm going to put it up on jack stands and put the A/C on to see if I can locate it.

I have Comptech Header, RT Cat, Comptech Cat-back and didn't have this until I put the header and RT Cat on.

If it is a heatshield, which sounds fairly logical, simply changing the shape or tightening bolts that hold them could make all the diff. All I know is I'm going to look into it tonight. The tough part for me is going to get the car level enough to mimic being on the ground but up on jack stands.

If it is the hanger, well JTso has pointed us to some urethane ones from Napa.

If it is the header, Comptech is going to get a call and I'll have everyone on this forum call the same guy too. I know we all paid top dollar for these and we will get a fix if there is a defect.

When you guys are troubleshooting the problem under the car, pay attention to the header collector hanger and rubber mount on the lower frame. The CT header hanger seems to be positioned a little lower than stock. This can stretch the rubber hanger mount and cause premature wear and tear.

Didn't Drkangel have a special hanger welded to his Comptech header when he had his?
I'm getting the same type of rattle when my a/c is on. I have the DC header, not Comptech though, along with the RT Hiflow cat and OEM exhaust.

Anyone else with the DC header getting a rattle? Like everyone said. It's only at idle like when you come up to a stoplight, when the a/c is on.

Well, i ordered the new exhaust hangers from napa yesterday. I'm going to try it out to see if it helps.

I did the hangers that JTso suggested a long time ago. It helped a bit with bringing the tips up a little higher but didn't get rid of my rattle. Still I think this is a resonance rattle, same way a subwoofer will rattle everything in your car. Moda's suggestion might work as it will change the resonating frequency of the sheilds.

well the rattle is really annoying, if adding a vibration hook toe the headers doesn't fix the rattle than i will go back to stock headers
